Japan: more sales data for Week 4 2020, Nintendo Switch (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest Japanese sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 5)

Unfortunately, no Day 1 sell-through data from Media Create this week!

Dengeki (Week 4)

Dengeki report that void tRrLM (); sold about 9 500 units at launch; 5 400 units on Nintendo Switch specifically. That’s a rather satisfying debut for a niche release from Nippon Ichi Software, especially as the game seemingly sold out at various stores.

Unfortunately, nothing much happened this week. Ring Fit Adventure did come close to the 600 000 units LTD milestone though, with 588 000 units (30 000 units this week). The only other entry in the Top 50 is the retail release of Mistover, which sold 1 244 units at launch. Considering the game was released on the Nintendo eShop last year, such low sales were expected.

Due to the lack of notable new releases, the market dropped some more this week:

  • Hardware: 81 000 units (-26% YoY)
  • Software: 331 000 units (-45.9% YoY)

Also, this week, Dengeki share some data about publishers market shares on Nintendo Switch. Over the years, Nintendo’s share has kept dropping: 80% during FY 2017-18, 60.1% during FY 2018-19, and 39% during the current Fiscal Year.

Of course, this is not due to Nintendo games selling less, but third-party games finally selling non-negligible amounts (and also Dengeki counting games published by The Pokémon Company separately). Here’s some examples for the current Fiscal Year:

  • Pokémon Sword and Shield (The Pokémon Company): 3.53 million units
  • Minecraft (Microsoft Japan): 530 000 units
  • Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition (Square-Enix): 500 000 units
  • Tsuri Spirits Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai-Namco): 390 000 units

In the past, there were times when only first-party truly sold well on Nintendo consoles, leading to third-party publishers snubbing them, which of course led to less games released, and a shrinking market. But on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo games are revitalizing the whole market, allowing third-party to find success on the platform, and expanding the market… a vicious cycle, in other words.
