Japan: more sales data for Week 31 2018, Etrian Odyssey X, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 31)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 497 000 units during Week 31, which is 126.27% of Week 30 sales. It’s the third week in a row that Software sales are up, which is a positive thing for the market.

The best-selling game is Etrian Odyssey X, which sold about 72 000 units at launch. That’s not as much as the previous entry in the series, Etrian Odyssey V (released in August 2016), which sold 93 000 units at launch (sell-through ratio: 75.84%). That being said, it had a higher sell-through: 87.57%, which indicates Atlus and retailers underestimated demand. Media Create believe that sales would have higher if there had been enough copies to avoid shortages.

The other big release this week is Pro Yakyuu Famista Evolution, that sold 43 000 units. It end up selling slightly less than the previous entry on Nintendo 3DS (Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax, that sold 48 000 units at launch back in April 2017), but they still believe it was a satisfactory performance. Both entries on Nintendo 3DS ended up selling about 150 000 units, and they expect this one to do the same.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for several Nintendo Switch games:

  • [NSW] Okami HD (Capcom) (¥2.990) – 40%. Decent debut, but sales are low;
  • [NSW] Jake Hunter Detective Story: Prism of Eyes (Arc System Works) (¥5.370) – 50%. Ok debut, with higher sell-through on Nintendo Switch (shipment was most likely smaller);
  • [NSW] [PS4] Darkest Dungeon (Kadokawa Games) (¥4.800) – 30%. Low debut, but not surprising for a niche release;
  • [NSW] Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy DX (Level 5) (¥5.980) – 10%. Terrible debut.

Dengeki (Week 31, Fiscal Year 2018-19)

Dengeki report slightly lower sales for Etrian Odyssey X: about 70 000 units. Just like Media Create, they point out that it did not sell as much as the previous entry (about 89 000 units at launch, over 128 000 units LTD, for Etrian Odyssey V), but despite that, it had a strong start with a ~90% sell-through ratio. Dengeki also point out that it’s the first time since Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (back in November 2017, so roughly 8 months ago) that a Nintendo 3DS games topped the Software charts.

The second best-selling game that week is Pro Yakyuu Famista Evolution, which sold about 45 000 units at launch, with a rather good sell-through: 45%. No shortages to worry about for Bandai-Namco, and retailers should have no trouble at all selling the remaining units (in fact, they’re most likely going to need additional shipments sooner rather than later). Overall, sales were pretty similiar to the previous entry: Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax (44 000 units at launch, 123 000 units LTD).

Other games mentioned by Dengeki:

  • WarioWare Gold – 35 000 units sold
  • SaGa Scarlet Grace – 23 000 units across Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4
  • Taiko Drum Master: Drum ‘n’ Fun – 24 000 units sold this week (steady sales so far), 127 000 units since launch.

This week, Dengeki also provide us with data for Fiscal Year 2018 as a whole (April 1st to July 29th). They report that sales dropped sharplu for both Hardware and Software:

  • Hardware: 1 220 000 units (-31.4%) / 35.7 billion Yen (-24.7%)
  • Software: 5.95 million units (-31.2%) / 38.5 billion Yen (-27.6%)
  • Total: 74.2 billion Yen (-26.2%)

They also point out that as of June, the market was actually slightly up: +3.09%, with 56.9 billion Yen in revenue. In other words, it’s July alone that tanked sales for the current Fiscal Year… not surprising when you see the drop in sales Year on Year in July. Of course, this is primarily due to the lack of major games like Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Splatoon 2 this year.

In July 2017, those two games sold 2.84 million units, and generated 19.8 billion Yen in revenue. In July and August, they sold over 4 million units, and generated 28 billion Yen. Dengeki explain that’s it’s going to be pretty difficult to close the gap, but they’re still looking forward to see how much the market can recover in August.
