Japan: more sales data for Week 30 2018, July, Mega Man X Legacy Collection (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 30)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 392 000 units. Since Week 30 was the start of the summer holidays for many students, which is why publishers tried to take advantage of that. The result: no less than 32 new releases this week alone, including 11 budget re-release. This is the most games released during the last week July since 2015 (2016 and 2017 had 12 games each).

However, there’s a catch (pretty easy to spot by looking at the Top 50): only 2 of those 32 new releases sold more than 10 000 units. So yes, sales did increase this week (107.85% of Week 29 sales), but as a whole, the market is still rather sluggish.

The main release of the week was Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2, which sold 58 000 units all versions and platforms combined. Unsurprisingly, fans focused on the bundle with both collections, which sold a combined 45 000 units on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for quite a few games:

  • [3DS] Etrian Odyssey X (Atlus) – 70%. Loyal fanbase + retailers ordering less units due to aging Nintendo 3DS = shortages (something Atlus even apologised for);
  • [3DS] WarioWare Gold (Nintendo – 20%. May seem a bit low, but fairly good opening as sales are expected to increase during week-end, and O-bon is just around the corner;
  • [NSW] Pro Baseball Famista Evolution (Bandai Namco Games) – 20%. A bit on the low side, but nothing too worrying;
  • [NSW] SaGa: Scarlet Grace – Scarlet Ambition (Square Enix) (¥5.800) – 40%. Decent debut, with higher sell-through than PlayStation 4 version (20%);
  • [NSW] Code of Princess EX (Pikii) – 20%. Low sell-through, but expected for this kind of niche release.

Dengeki (Week 30, July 2018)

Dengeki report that Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun was the best-selling game in Japan for the second week in a row, with about 32 000 units sold.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection had a great start, with 63 000 units for all platforms and versions combined. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2 = 49 000 units sold
  • Mega Man X Legacy Collection = 8 000 units
  • Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 = 6 000 units

Finally, Dengeki report that Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou sold 6 000 units at launch, on Nintendo Switch.

Also, Dengeki shared some data for July 2018. Last year had two mega hits: Splatoon 2 on Nintendo Switch, and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Therefore, it was expected that the market would be down in 2018. Here’s how bad the drop was:

  • Hardware: 320 000 units (-54.7%) / 9.3 billion Yen (-47.8%)
  • Software: 1 410 000 units (-66.1%) / 8.1 billion Yen (-70.6%)
  • Total: 17.4 billion Yen (-61.7%)

Here’s the Top 5 Software for July 2018 (July 2nd to July 29th):

  1. [NSW] Octopath Traveler (Square-Enix): 142 000 units
  2. [NSW] Taiko Drum Master: Drum ‘n’ Fun (Bandai-Namco): 103 000 units
  3. [NSW] Mario Tennis Aces (Nintendo): 90 000 units
  4. [NSW] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Nintendo): 78 000 units
  5. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Japan): 77 000 units

For Dengeki, it’s quite encouraging that Octopath Traveler managed to rank #1 in July: a brand new IP doing well in a market largely dominated by sequels and games from popular series is a pretty healthy thing. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much the only positive thing to be said about this Top 5 Software, as only 2 games sold more than 100 000 units, which is far from stellar… Naturally, they hope that the market will recover during the second half of the Summer season (August).
