[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 37, 2018 (September 10th – September 16th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales data for the Japanese video game market, courtesy of Media Create and Famitsu! Unfortunately, due to an extremely busy schedule this week, our usual analysis will only cover new releases.

Media Create

This week again, quite a few games were released, which is why the Top 20 Media Create has many new faces. On Nintendo platforms, we have two entries, starting with Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Drive Kit. Unfortunately, it’s off to a really poor start with only 11 659 units sold. In comparison, the previous two kits, the Variety Kit and the Robot Kit, sold over 90 000 and 28 000 units respectively.

The Variety Kit looked like it was off to a promising, and it seems to have been selling steadily since launch. Unfortunately, the Drive Kit shows there isn’t much interest in Nintendo Labo, and if sales don’t pick up during the holiday season in December, it’s unlikely 2019 will see the release of additional kits. While it’s definitely too early to call Nintendo Labo dead, it really isn’t to say it’s clearly no Wii-like phenomenon.

The second entry of the week is Undertale, which is off to a respectable debut with nearly 6 000 units sold (5 990 units to be precise). In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 2 652 units at launch according to Famitsu, but it was a late release: on Nintendo Switch, the digital and retail releases were simultaneous.

The regular edition of NBA 2K19 didn’t manage to make it in the Top 20 from Media Create, which means it sold less than 3 569 units.

Media Create – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped slightly, and went from 43 513 units to 38 738 units. This is hardly surprising during a slow period like September, especially without any major releases. Also, it’s possible some players simply decided to wait for the newly announced Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundles, but there’s no way to say for sure with the amount of data at our disposal.

Unfortunately, sales are still down Year on Year, but at the very least they are still within the 35-50 000 units range we predicted it would stay in until sales started to pick up in late September / early October. Also, the weekly drops Year on Year are still nowhere near big enough for total 2018 sales to drop below total 2017 sales any time soon.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are quite flat this week, with 7 291 units sold (as opposed to 7 483 during Week 36).
