Japan – Media Create sales for Week 23, 2015 (June 1 – 7) [Top 50]

After a pretty good launch, Splatoon kept on selling well during Week 23 with over 68 913 units sold. This brings the total sales to 213 731 units, which is quite impressive for a new IP… especially on the Wii U! It looks like word of mouth is doing wonders for the game in Japan, which seems to be quite popular on the internet with tons of Miiverse screencaps and artworks.

If sales were that good during the second week, it’s not just because the game remained popular, it’s also due the new shipments sent to retailers (after all, the game was virtually sold out at launch!). Therefore, many people who couldn’t purchase the game during Week 22 ended up doing it during Week 23, compensating the usually sharp drop in sales witness during the second week.

During Week 23, two games came out on Nintendo 3DS: Stella Glow and Atelier Rorona Plus – The Alchemist of Arland.

The first one had a rather disappointing launch, with only 13 332 units sold. Of course, we’re talking about a game that might not have come out at all, since Imageepoch (the developers) went bankrupt last month (but not before they sold the rights to SEGA, who ended up publishing it). That being said, it’s pretty unlikely SEGA is satisfied with those sales…

As for Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemy of Arland, it sold 8 352 units during the first four days, which is definitely not much… but for the third version of a game already released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita (where most of the fanbase is) a while ago, it could have sold much worse.

Hardware-wise, Wii U is still #1 of sales for the second week in a row, once again thanks to Splatoon. The popularity of Nintendo’s colourful third-person shooter, and more precisely its word of mouth, has been doing wonders for Wii U sales, which actually went up this week (which is pretty unusual following the launch of a major game, and without any titles released). 21 169 Wii U were sold during Week 23 in Japan.

Finally, there’s the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 17 891 units last week in Japan. While not catastrophic, those sales definitely could be better (even for a console which has been on the market for over 5 years now), especially since the gap between sales in 2014 and 2015 just keeps on getting wider each week. For Week 23, the drop is over 50% (17 891 vs 36 270).

However, both Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ and the Pearl White New Nintendo 3DS come out tomorrow in Japan, and those should definitely boost sales (at least, for a couple of weeks).
