[Japan] Famitsu sales for October 2023 (Top 5 Software, Publishers, Hardware)

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu, with Hardware and Software sales for October 2023 in Japan (September 25th to October 29th 2023, so 5 weeks in total).

Famitsu

Top 5 Software

This month, Pikmin 4 was ousted from the top spot of the Top 5 Software by Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The first brand new 2D Mario adventure in about 11 years is off to a great start with over 800.000 units sold at retail alone in just 10 days. There’s little doubt it will end up selling well over 2 million units by the end of the year, what with the holiday season just around the corner.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is already a resounding success: it opened higher than New Super Mario Bros. Wii back in 2009 (and that’s only with retail sales!).

Detective Pikachu Returns enjoyed good sales with over 100.000 units sold during its launch month (more than the first game on Nintendo 3DS). Unfortunately, sales appear to be fairly frontloaded, due in part to the nature of the game itself (a fairly short and linear adventure game with little replayability and no multiplayer) and the Pokémon TCG card included in first-print copies inflating pre-orders.

Finally, Jinsei Game for Nintendo Switch might very well be the surprise hit of the upcoming holiday season. It’s already sold over 60.000 in less than a month, and sales have been fairly strong since launch (it’s already doubled its launch week sales!).

Also, Famitsu reveals that all 3 versions of Fate/Samurai Remnant sold over 89.000 units combined.

Publishers

Once again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher in Japan with over 1 million units sold. Most of those sales come from Super Mario Bros. Wonder, with Pikmin 4 and the usual evergreen titles making up the rest.

The Pokémon Company is #2 with over 150.000 units sold. Detective Pikachu Returns makes up the bulk of those sales, with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet also contributing a good chunk.

  1. Nintendo – 1.136.000
  2. The Pokémon Company – 154.000
  3. Sony Interactive Entertainment – 109.000

Hardware

Hardware-wise, October was another solid month for the Nintendo Switch. It sold 339.650 units, which is slightly more than in September. However, October had 5 weeks instead of 4 for September, so that increase is actually hiding a very soft drop in sales.

  1. Nintendo Switch – 339.650 units sold (307.447 units sold in September 2023)
  2. PlayStation 5 – 112.186 units sold (181.056 units sold in September 2023)
