Japan: Famitsu sales for October 2018 (October 01 – October 28)

Today, Famitsu shared their latest report on the video game market in Japan, this time covering October (and more precisely the period going from October 1st to October 28th, so 4 weeks in total).

Software-wise, sales were dominated by western games: 3 of the 5 top-selling games are from western developers/publishers. They were also dominated by the PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch only managed to grab 1 spot in the Top 5 Software. That game is Super Mario Party, which is off to a strong start with 263 101 units sold: a good start ahead of the holiday season!

Here’s the Top 5 Software from Famitsu:

01./00. [PS4] Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII <ACT> (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2018.10.12} (¥7.900) – 376.141 / NEW
02./00. [NSW] Super Mario Party <ETC> (Nintendo) {2018.10.05} (¥5.980) – 263.101 / NEW
03./00. [PS4] Red Dead Redemption II # <ACT> (Take-Two Interactive Japan) {2018.10.26} (¥8.800) – 136.161 / NEW
04./00. [PS4] Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey # <RPG> (Ubisoft) {2018.10.05} (¥8.400) – 77.742 / NEW
05./03. [PS4] Warriors Orochi 4 # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2018.09.27} (¥7.800) – 40.827 / 146.702 (-61%)

PS4 – 4
NSW – 1

This month again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher, mostly thanks to Super Mario Party. However, Sony wasn’t that far behind, with sales boosted by Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. Since Pokémon is published by The Pokémon Company in Japan, Nintendo will not be #1 in November!

  1. Nintendo – 460.000
  2. Sony Interactive Entertainment – 430.000
  3. Take-Two Interactive Japan – 139.000

October is far from the best for video games sales, and that’s why it’s not real surprise that Hardware sales would be down during that month. And this time, no platform is spared, not even the Nintendo Switch. That being said, the console did manage to sell over 173 000 units, which is a respectable performance during that slow month. The comparison with last year isn’t pretty (sales are down by nearly 50%), due to the launch of Super Mario Odyssey which boosted sales in October 2017.

The Nintendo Switch was the most successful platform in October in Japan, for the 8th month in a row.

As for Nintendo 3DS sales, they were 4 times higher during the same month last year, which is to be expected for such an aging platform (that has already reached saturation point: there really isn’t anything left that would lead to a sustained increase in sales;, not even a price drop).
