Dragon Quest XI headed west next year, more details coming this Fall (+ screens, more details)

Dragon Quest XI – Localisation announced

Yes, it’s official. No, it’s not a joke or an July’s Fools. Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete is indeed coming to Europe and North America, as Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. It will be released next year, with more details coming this Fall.

Unfortunately, Square-Enix didn’t specify which versions they were bringing over: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, both, neither? We will most likely have to wait until this Fall before finding out… Therefore, we’re going to list this game as [???] on our Upcoming Releases page, to avoid making it look like anything has already been confirmed.

Here’s a video message from Yuji Horii, making the important announcement to Dragon Quest fans worldwide:

Dragon Quest XI – Latest details

The next issue of Jump magazine comes out next week, and by then, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will have already been available in Japan for a few days. And yet, it looks like it will have one last surprise: Reincarnated Monsters, special and extremely rare monsters that have reincarnated. They’re not necessarily extremely strong beasts, they can also be really cute… or quite simply, just super rare.

They may be rare, but they’re still pretty easy to spot. Not only do they have different names, but their appearance also makes it clear they’re no ordinary monsters. It looks like some NPCs will give you special quests, asking you to find specific Reincarnated Monsters.

Dragon Quest XI – Interviews

Next, some details from recent interview with the developers. As you’ve probably noticed if you’ve watched footage of the game, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age does not have voice acting. It’s something the development team debated over, though in the end, they decided to keep the characters mute.

One of the reasons they didn’t go with voice acting is that it would have taken a longer time to record all the voices. It would have also required the script to be completed earlier, which is a problem as Yuji Horii made adjustements to it until the very last minute.

Regarding the protagonist, Yuji Horii wanted players to be him, which is why he gave instructions to avoid showing his expressions too openly. For example, when he gets angry, you will see it via subtle cues such as body language or the movement of his eyes. And yes, you can remove him from your party, if you want (though we imagine he must be in for key parts in the story).
