Japan: more sales data for Week 13 2020, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Important note: Dengeki have announced that they will no longer provide sales data via their website. In other words, this week is the last time we get data from them. The Day 1 sell-through data from Media Create will therefore be moved to the usual post with the weekly sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create (full list on this page), starting next week.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 14)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one new Nintendo Switch title:

• [NSW] Kotoba no Puzzle: Mojipittan Encore (Bandai Namco Games) (¥3.200) – 20%. Slow debut, but sales should pick up during the weekend.

Dengeki (Week 13)

Dengeki report that Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 719 000 units during its second week, bringing total sales for 2.55 million units. It sold over 2 million units in less than two full weeks.

Here’s the current best-selling games on Nintendo Switch:

• Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 3.69 million units sold
• Pokémon Sword and Shield: 3.55 million units
• Splatoon 2: 3.26 million units
• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 2.64 million units

Given the current sales momentum, Animal Crossing: New Horizons will have no trouble outselling all these games in the (near) future, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe “falling” first next week.

As for One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it sold 146 000 units at launch, with 66 000 units on Nintendo Switch.

Here’s how the other new games fared this week:

• Revenge of Justice (Kemco): 3 429 units sold, including 2 048 units on Nintendo Switch
• Space Invaders Invicible Collection (Capcom): 1 276 units sold

Also, this week, we get some data about the past Fiscal Year (and more precisely the period going from April 1st 2019 to March 29th 2020). Unfortunately, there’s some good and bad news:

• Hardware: 6 390 000 units (+7.4%) / 171.9 billion Yen (-3.8%)
• Software: 26.06 million units (-3.8%) / 171.1 billion Yen (-4%)
• Total: 342 billion Yen (-3.9%)

It’s the second Fiscal Year in a row that the market is down, and again, the Nintendo Switch wasn’t quite able to compensate for the drop in sales for all the other platforms. What’s more, Hardware sales by revenue dropped, due to the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite, which is quite cheaper than the OG model.

The Nintendo Switch saw a significant increase in sales:

• Nintendo Switch (Hardware): 5.26 million units (+33.7%)
• Nintendo Switch (Software): 18.71 million units (+31.9%)
• PlayStation 4 (Hardware): 990 000 units (-32.1%)
• PlayStation 4 (Software): 6.65 million units (-32.6%)
