[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 30, 2017 (July 24th – July 30th) [Top 50]

This week, quite a few games made their way to the Top 20 from Media Create, but the star is quite obviously Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which sold over 2 million units on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4. We thoroughly commented those sales when Famitsu shared their data, earlier today, so make sure to check out this post for our comments!
Media Create’s data isn’t widely different from Famitsu’s, so there’s nothing much to say about them.
Next, Splatoon 2 had a massive drop during its second week on the market, with “only” 105 326 units sold. That’s a 84% drop compared to launch week, which only means one thing: Splatoon 2, and by definition the Nintendo Switch, are over. Finished. …Ok, maybe not.
The drop is obviously due to the limited Nintendo Switch userbase: there’s 1 286 300 of them in the wild, and Splatoon 2 has already sold 753 411 units since launch… that’s a pretty crazy attach rate, and it’s unlikely it will go any higher. Fortunately, Nintendo did manage to ship more consoles than usual this week, so Splatoon 2’s drop isn’t nearly as bad as it could have been.
Besides, Splatoon 2 is guaranteed to keep selling a steady pace throughout the summer holidays, and throughout the rest of 2017 (and beyond). It will reach 1 million units before the end of the month, unless shortages rear their ugly head earlier than anticipated (well… they’re still there, actually, but Nintendo has been able to ship many more consoles in the past two weeks, as previously announced).
Next, Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy had a pretty decent second week, with 24 491 units sold: that’s -65% compared to launch week, which is a respectable performance. It’s now sold 95 358 units since launch, and it will reach 100 000 units by next week. Sales in the upcoming weeks will tell us how early we can expect them to top 200 000 units.
As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it’s selling at a steady pace, and the 13 841 additional units sold this week (+7%) bring the total to over 600 000 units (601 869 units to be precise). The increase seems to be due to the stronger Nintendo Switch shipments and/or pay day… not that it makes much of a difference: it’s still one of the games most new Nintendo Switch owners end up getting (at least, for those not buying it for Splatoon 2 exclusively).
Hey! Pikmin is also selling well, with 11 900 units sold this week (-45% compared to the second week). It’s not lighting the charts on fire, but so far sales have been pretty good. By the end of the holidays, we will have a better idea of what to expect for total sales, At this rate, over 200 000 units looks like a definite possibility.
Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Dokonandesu? had an OK second week, with 8 027 units sold (-62%). All previous entries sold small but steady amounts, and it’s too early to say whether this one is going to do the same. So far, 28 910 units have been sold.
Unfortunately for Nintendo, ARMS doesn’t seem to have benefitted much from the launch of Splatoon 2 and the increased Nintendo Switch shipments. It sold 5 959 units so far, a 25% increase over the previous week. It’s not anything to worry about, but it certainly is a tad disappointing. 183 945 units have been sold so far, and it looks like it will reach 200 000 units by the end of the month.
Next, we have The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with pretty steady sales: 5 803 units (-3%). Total sales are getting closer to 550 000 units: it’s standing at 548 819 as of Week 30. If you add last known Wii U sales (133 024 units), the game has already sold 681 843 units. To reach 1 million units this year, the remaining 318 157 units need to be sold during the next 22 weeks, so 14 461 units/week.
And here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 have been faring:
- 14./11. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 5.283 / 3.300.384 (+0%). Sales remain steady as ever, which is to be expected now that the Sumemr holidays are in full swing… and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon remain nowhere to be seen;
- 17./17. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.607 / 208.705 (+13%). It looks like the massive increase in Nintendo 3DS sales this week did benefit to this one, which is selling outrageously steadily for a game from 2012!

This week, the release of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has had a tremendous impact on Hardware sales, and more specifically the Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation 4. Thanks to the New Nintendo 2DS XL, and the Dragon Quest XI bundle, sales have exploded to over 142 000 units… quite unusual for an non-holiday week, especially for a console on its 7th year on the market.
The New Nintendo 2DS XL sold over 110 000 units this week, and makes for 33.6% of total Hardware sales this week. It looks like the Dragon Quest XI bundle makes for most of those sales, which implies it could have sold around 90-100 000 units alone. Hopefully Media Create will share more details on that on Friday.
Thanks to those fantastic sales, the Nintendo 3DS is now up Year on Year, and that’s including the Pokémon Nintendo 2DS bundle for 2016 (100 000 units, not tracked). It’s not guaranteed that it will not drop below 2016 sales in the upcoming months, but even if it does, the drop shouldn’t be too hard. The Nintendo 3DS is showing that it still has plenty of fight left in it, despite its age.
Also, another milestone was reached this week: the Nintendo 3DS has now sold over 23 million units in Japan alone (23 097 151 units to be precise). It’s still far from the Nintendo DS and its +30 million units sold, but in a post-smartphone boom market, this is quite the remarkable result.
Now, it remains to be seen how far the Nintendo 3DS can keep going. 24 millions? 25 millions? 26 millions definitely isn’t possible, as the Nintendo 3DS is likely to be discontinued before that could even happen. But 25 million is definitely possible, as long as holiday 2017 sales are quite strong, and the handheld doesn’t drop off a cliff in 2018.
To reach 24 million units before the end of the year, the Nintendo 3DS needs to sell 902 849 units during the next 22 weeks, so 41 038 units on average. It’s going to be tough for it to sell that much, especially in September-October. However, if Summer sales are strong enough, it should get a nice headstart to compensate for the upcoming slow months.
Next, we have the Nintendo Switch with 89 314 units sold this week. Nintendo did promise bigger shipments this Summer, and so far, they’re keeping that promise. However, it remains to be seen how long they will be able to ship that many units on a weekly basis. One thing’s for sure: we can expect much bigger shipments than usual (at least 50 000 units / week) at least until the end of the month.
So far, Nintendo has sold 1 286 300 Nintendo Switch consoles in Japan, and it doesn’t look like the 2 million units milestone is going to be reached anytime soon… especially if sales drop hard after the Summer holidays, like we are expecting. So far, Nintendo is struggling to keep up with demand, and we definitely haven’t seen the last of those pesky shortages!
Finally, the Wii U sold 142 units this week.
