The Super Mario Bros. Movie grosses over 6.5 billion Yen in Japan
Last week was the Golden Week in Japan (a series of consecutive holidays), and it looks like many people chose to spend some of their free time in theatres. According to the latest press release from Toho (Japanese distributor), The Super Mario Bros. Movie was again the most popular movie during the weekend in Japan with 2,473,334,910 Yen / $18,335,821 grossed between May 5th and May 7h (that’s +34.2% more than during launch weekend).
But it’s not just during the weekend that the movie performed well: it also saw strong sales during the whole of the Golden Week. As of May 7th, the movie has grossed a total of 6,538,730,020 Yen / $48,474,221 (that’s nearly +4.7 billion Yen in a week).
Sales topped 6.5 billion Yen after just ten days, making The Super Mario Bros. Movie the fastest movie this year to reach the 6 billion Yen milestone. In comparison, it took 31 days for Top Gun Maverick to reach that milestone (it ended up grossing 13.7 billion Yen / $101 million). During the first 10 days, The Super Mario Bros. movie grossed over twice as much money as Top Gun Maverick (2,890,340,940 Yen).
Here’s how The Super Mario Bros. Movie fared compared to two of Universal movies in Japan:
- Despicable Me 3 (7.312 billion Yen in total)
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 373.5% of Despicable 3’s sales during the second weekend, and 324.1% of Despicable 3’s sales during the first 10 days
- Jurassic World: Fallen King (8.080 billion Yen in total)
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie: 269.9% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s sales during the second weekend, and 183.6% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s sales during the first 10 days
