Yesterday, Nintendo announced that a third update for Super Mario Maker would be released on November 5th (November 4th in North America). This Ver. 1.2.0 several long-awaited features, such as mid-level checkpoints and power-ups dependent to Mario’s status. Earlier today, Nintendo posted the official changelog on its website.

Here it is:

  • Added the functionality to play Event Courses Users can unlock new Mystery Mushroom costumes when they clear certain Event Courses.
  • Users will be able to play courses created by Official Makers in Course World.
  • Added checkpoint flags.
  • Added a small Easter egg in Course Maker.
  • Added a hard mode in Gnat Attack minigame.
  • Other adjustments for a more pleasant gaming experience.

This update will require at least 297MB (314.5MB in North America) of free space on your Wii U or external HDD. To download it, you have two options:

  • let the Wii U do its thing if you have automatic downloads activated;
  • launch Super Mario Maker from the Home Menu (not the Quick Start Menu), in order to trigger the update manually.

To check out that you have the latest version of Super Mario Maker, simply launch the game: you should see this at the bottom right corner of the screen:

  • North America (EDT): 8PM
  • North America (PDT): 5PM
  • Japan: 10AM

Next, some additional news from Japan. Nintendo uploaded the overview trailer for the Super Mario Maker Ver. 1.2.0 update, that you can find below. It’s basically the same as the one from Nintendo of America, but includes an extra bit about Shinya Arino from GameCenterCX.

His level will be available following the update on November 5th as one of the Event Courses (alongside the one made by the celebrity from the TV Commercials). Beating it will unlock a special transformation for the Mystery Mushroom. Good news: players from all around the world will be able to play the two levels!
