Quest of Dungeons: devlog for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions

Quest of DungeonsQuest of Dungeons was announced for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS back in February, but we finally have some more news. Last month, David Amador posted a devlog, in order to talk about the development of the two versions of the game (which are being developed simultaneously). Right now, both versions are already up and running (which includes graphics, sound, input… but also lots of bugs).

For the Wii U version, things were rather straightforward since the console was powerful enough to have the game up and running without any real issues. But on Nintendo 3DS, some portions of the code had to be really optimised, since David Amador is targetting 60fps for that platform.

Right now, the focus is on making console specific features. For example, the Wii U version will have:

  • off-tv support (with Pro Controller support)
  • Pro Controller support
  • touch based inventory, map, etc on the GamePad screen

As for the Nintendo 3DS version, it’s apparently the most challenging of the two, due to the dualscreen: all the content has to fit in a coherent way on the two screens. David Amador first tried to split the UI in two, with the items on the top screen, and their description on the bottom one. But he wasn’t really satisfied with this option, so he completely redid the UI.

Now, players can:

  • get details on and then equip/use items by touching them
  • use the buttons via dpad and a/b/x/y.

StreetPass will also be used: when you meet another player, you will share ghosts from your previous runs with them. The thing is, when you die, the game saves your character as it is (stats, equipment, etc.), and then, there’s a chance you might encounter your old self during a new playthrough. It’s that “former self” that is sent to other players.

Finally, here’s some screenshots:

Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date for Quest of Dungeons on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS, but it’s only a matter of weeks until we get one!
