Pokémon news (July 20): Pokémon GO, Pokémon Global Link, more

Today’s Pokémon news:

  • Pokémon GO
  • Pokémon Global Link
  • Pokémon Sun and Moon
  • Pokémon distribution
  • Pokkén Tournament (Arcade)

Pokémon GO

According to TechCrunch, Pokémon GO was supposed to go live today in Japan. But it looks like the launch was delayed in the end. One of the reason for that delay is an internet email from McDonald’s to The Pokémon Company, which somehow ended up on the internet.

The whole thing apparently went viral, and the morning launch plans were quite simply scrapped (though it did seem at first that the launch would simply be delayed until the afternoon). Apparently, the two companies didn’t want the excitement generated by this leak to end up overloading the servers.

The Nikkei then went to report that the launch would be tomorrow (on Thursday)… before it was changed to “this week” (or later).

Also, McDonald’s sent a press release to confirm their collaboration with The Pokémon Company for Pokémon GO. Unfortunately, they didn’t give any details regarding that collaboration: more will be announced at a later date (most likely when the app itself is available in Japan).

Pokémon Global Link

Yesterday, it was announced that Pokémon Global Link services for Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire would be terminated later this year. Today, additional details about that were announced, including the list of services impacted.

Here’s the list of services that will go offline:

  • Logging in
  • Game Sync
  • Returning items to the game
  • Ranking Battle

The following internet features will not be impacted:

  • GTS
  • Wonder Trade
  • Free Battle

The Pokémon Company also announced a Thank You campaign, which starts next week (on July 26th). From that day, everything on the PokéMileage Club will be available with a 50% off discount. Also, removed Ability Capsules will be re-added, and will cost 5 000 PokéMiles each.

Pokémon distribution

Last week, we learned that Shiny Yveltal would be distributed at Smyths Toy Stores from August 16th in the United Kingdom. It turns out that August 16th is also the end date for another (unannounced) distribution: Shiny Xerneas. Just like with the Shiny Yveltal distribution, you need to go to a Smyths Toy Store in order to get a serial code for the Pokémon.
