Are you ready for one of the most left-field announcements of the year? Introducing Penguin Wars, which is getting a remake on the Nintendo Switch! Yes, we’re talking about the Arcade game originally released on 1985, that ended up ported to the NES and GameBoy, and even the MSX. This Nintendo Switch remake will be released this Fall in Japan.

For those of you who never heard of this game before, here’s what Wikipedia has to say about it. You get to control one of five animals, and play against all the others. You’re on opposite sides of a square table, with five balls on each side. The goal of the game is to roll those balls over to the other side, with the loser being the one that ends up with all 10 balls on their side (or the one with the most balls at the end of the time limit).

The thing is, if a player is hit by one of the balls, they are knocked unconscious for a certain amount of time. Naturally, during that time, your opponent will be free to send as many balls as possible to your side, which is why aiming for your opponent to knock them down is a key part of any good strategy in this game.

According to early leaks from Famitsu, the Nintendo Switch remake will feature various new elements, but the basic gameplay will remain true to the original. Once again, several characters/animals will be playable, and each one will have its own strengths and weaknesses, including their own Special Skill. The remake will offer 1 vs 1 and 2 vs 2 battles, and special rules (such as bombs replacing balls, for example) to spice things up a bit.

As far as multiplayer goes, it will be possible to play with other players locally, or via the internet. Famitsu specifically mentions that local multiplayer can be played with up to 4 players. It looks like there’s also a Story Mode for those who prefer to play on their own, with progression systems (XP, levels, etc.).

As for the music, this remake will include tracks composed by various Japanese and international composers, from the game music club scene.
