Penguin-kun Gira Gira Wars: more details and screenshots

A few days ago, City Connection announced they were working on a remake of Penguin-kun Wars for the Nintendo Switch. And today, they opened the official website, providing us with plenty of new (and not really new) details about the game.

As mentioned last time, Penguin-kun Gira Gira Wars is a remake of an Arcade (later ported to various platforms, including the GameBoy). The base gameplay is the same: you throw balls at your opponents, and try to have 10 of them on his side of the table. But this remake also adds character growth (Single Player), new battle rules, new animals, and more.

The game is playable in Single Player, but also multiplayer with:

  • Local multiplayer: up to 4 people, you can use Joy-Cons to play if you want;
  • Online multiplayer: you can use various rules, play with characters you improved in Single Player, and more.

Interesting tidbit: you can use a vertical display in Handheld Mode (arcade-like), which is pretty handy when you want to play with a friend on the Nintendo Switch. Actually, it’s what the developers recommend for local multiplayer! Of course, there’s also a splitscreen option (when you’re playing on the TV, but also in other modes).

As for music, the game features a “modern” arrangement of “Motto Sekkin Shimasho” (lit. “Get Closer”), the original main theme, but also brand new tracks composed by the following people:

  • Takashi Okamoto
  • Yamajet
  • Yu_Asahina
  • Kent Alexander
  • GRATEC MOUR
  • Aurtas
  • Ayatsugu_Otowa

Just above, we mentioned the new rules, but let’s start by explaining the basic rules (again). The ‘sport’ played in this game is called Gira Ball, and your goal is to send balls to your opponents at the other side of the table. In doing so, you make them lose health, and the more balls sent on the other side, the more damage dealt.

The game also offers various other rules, such as 2 vs 2, one with obstacles on the table, one with bombs replacing balls, and more.

Each character/animal has two special techniques. Some of them can be activated when you have a ball (offense), while others can be activated when you don’t have one (defense).

The Story Mode has you go to Gira Gira Land, where you get to battle various opponents. When you accept their challenge, the battle begins. Quite interestingly, you can choose to play with teams, or special rules if you want (which are not just for multiplayer, it seems).

As you win battles, your fame increases, and when you’re famous enough, a boss appears. If you manage to win, that boss will become your ally. Finally, by eating special candy you get as reward for winning battles, you can increase the stats of your characters (such as their strength, speed, etc.).

Finally, here’s the second batch of screenshots for Penguin-kun Gira Gira Wars:
