NPD: sales for August 2015 (United States); amiibo and Splatoon sales,

Software

In August, the video game market as a whole was slightly down Year on Year in the United States (-2%), with $548 million in spending generated. This is due to weaker Software and Hardware sales:

  • Software: $207.9 million (-10% compared to $231.3 million in August 2014), due to strong games released during that month last year.
  • Hardware: $190.5 million (-2% compared to  $195.3 million in August 2014).

Unfortunately, we didn’t get many sales number this month, though Nintendo did announce (via a Press Release) that total sales for Splatoon have already passed 600 000 units in the United States alone (60 000 units in August). At this rate, it should have no trouble reaching 1 million before the end of the year. As for amiibo, they just keep on selling: we’re already at 7 million figures sold in the United States alone!

Splatoon 1Finally, thanks to the usual insiders, we know that Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold sold roughly 13 000 units in the United States in August (it launched on August 4th).

Hardware

Hardware-wise, Nintendo announced via a Press Release that sales for the Nintendo 3DS are up by 30% from January to August, once again due to the strong launch of the New Nintendo 3DS XL in February. Unfortunately, the comparison gets worse and worse each month: from January to July, sales were up by 35% for example.

Now it remains to be seen how Nintendo’s handheld will sell during the remaining months of 2015, which has some really strong releases lined-up: Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (along with the New Nintendo 3DS bundle), The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, and more.

Finally, according to the usual insiders, the Wii U sold only 43 000 units in August in the United States, which explains why Nintendo didn’t comment on those in their statement.
