Nintendo Switch: latest sales data from France (3.3 million units sold, Software sales, more)

Nintendo France have announced that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 3.3 million units in France alone, as of December 31st. That’s even better than expected (the company was aiming for 3 million units sold by the end of the year), due to strong sales in 2019: 1.25 million units, which is even better than in 2018 (1.1 million units).

No data is provided for the Nintendo Switch Lite, other than it being the 3rd best-selling platform after the OG model and the PlayStation 4 (and ahead of the Xbox One). According to Philippe Lavoué, the console sold mostly to young adults, with many of them picking up Pokémon Sword and Shield with it. Some of them already owned the OG model, and saw the Lite as a complementary device. That being said, during the holiday season, most of sales were for the OG model.

According to data from Nintendo France, about 30% of Nintendo Switch users in the country are women, and the company expects that number to grow with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March. The Nintendo Switch userbase is mostly comprised of two main groups: young adults, and families with children (about 50% each).

Software-wise, the Nintendo Switch dominated sales. In 2019, no less than 50% of all games sold at retail were from Nintendo. Here’s some data:

  • Pokémon Sword and Shield: 650 000 units
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 502 000 units
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3: 392 000 units
  • Ring Fit Adventure: 120 000 units, but with shortages. TV advertisements will resume in February, once retailers finally get their hands on new shipments.

Finally, a quick note about Nintendo’s infamous evergreen titles: 7 of their 13 best-selling games in 2019 were released in 2018 or 2017 (that includes the likes of Super Mario Party, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, etc.).
