Monster Hunter Stories to be released in Europe and North America, this Fall

Released last year in Japan (in October to be precise), Monster Hunter Stories is a spin-off of the Monster Hunter series, and one aimed at kids specifically. While in mainline Monster Hunter games, your goal is to hunt monsters, Monster Hunter Stories has you befriend them and battle by their side instead.

You get to play as a Rider, who bonds with monsters: this allows you to raise their potential, and then unleash powerful moves in battle. The game uses a turn-based battle system, with a party of up to five monsters.

While on the field, you can ride your monsters, and use their various abilities to explore the world: you can fly, swim, break rocks, and do a lot more with your monster.

Overall, Monster Hunter Stories is a really unique RPG, and an even more unique Monster Hunter game, unlike any other. The game sold well in Japan, with over 300 000 units sold, though there’s no doubt Capcom expected much more (a kids-focused spin-off of one of the most popular franchises in Japan, on Nintendo 3DS, and with an anime series airing at a prime timeslot on TV).

And yet, during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, it was announced that Monster Hunter Stories would be released this Fall in Europe and North America. Very little details were given about the western version of the game (we don’t even have screenshots), but no doubt we will hear more about the game at E3 2017, in June.

In the mean time, why not check out the segment from the Nintendo Direct presentation? It starts at 2:02!

This announcement certainly makes us wonder about the anime series, currently airing in Japan. According to a previous report, the western release depended on that anime series, with Fuji TV being interested in bringing it to other countries.

Monster Hunter Stories (3DS) releases this Fall in Europe and North America. The Upcoming Releases page has been updated!
