Minecraft: how to transfer your worlds / saves from Wii U Edition to Nintendo Switch Edition

Earlier today, a new update for Minecraft: Wii U Edition and Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition was released. This update brings a pretty neat feature: save data transfer from the Wii U Edition to the Nintendo Switch Edition. If you’re wondering how it all works, you’ve come to the right place. Follow the steps below, and you will be able to transfer your worlds without a hitch!

But first, here’s what you need to do the transfer:

  • a Wii U console
  • a copy of Minecraft: Wii U Edition
  • a Nintendo Switch console
  • a copy of Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition
  • an internet connection

And here’s the steps to follow:

  • Turn on both the Wii U and Nintendo Switch, and launch the game on both. They both need to be on at the same time, so Mojang recommends you have the Wii U connected to the TV, and keep the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode;
  • In Minecraft: Wii U Edition, click on “Play Game”
  • Make sure you’re connected to the internet, and the Nintendo Network (you cannot be playing offline)
  • Highlight the save file you want to transfer
  • Press X to access “Save Options”, and select “Transfer Save to Nintendo Switch”
  • Press the OK button
  • Wait for the Nintendo Switch to accept the transfer
  • In Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, click on “Play Game”
  • Make sure you’re connected to the internet, and the Nintendo Network (you cannot be playing offline)
  • Press Y to access the “Load” tab, and select “Transfer Save from Wii U”
  • Press OK
  • Wait until connection with the Wii U is established
  • Wait for the transfer to be completed on both platforms
  • Confirm the transfer on both the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch
  • In Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, Access the “Load Tab”. You should see the newly transferred save file
  • You’re done!
