Media Create sales for Week 4, 2016 (Jan 25 – 31) [Top 50]

As mentioned last week, pre-orders for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash in Japan were surprisingly good, and it was definitely possible the game would have a much better launch than in Europe and North America. And today, we have a confirmation: during the first four days, the game sold a total of 55 331 units at retail.
According to Famitsu, this is makes for 60-80% of what Nintendo shipped to retailers for launch day, which is a pretty satisfying result. With 55 331 units sold, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash sold more in Japan in four days than in North America in over a month! Now it remains to be seen how players will react to the game, and whether it will get a better reception than in the rest of the world. If said reception is as bad as in Europe and North America, this will have a pretty negative impact on sales.
Due to the many new entries of Week 4, the usual games are pushed towards the bottom of the charts. For example, Monster Hunter X almost left the Top 10, despite sales dropping by 18% this week (it still managed to sell over 17 000 units). Hyrule Warriors Legends had a pretty standard second week, with 15 174 units sold (-72%).
As for Splatoon, it was forced to leave the Top 10, and it ended up at #13 despite steady sales (13 256 units, -3%). Now that Nintendo has stopped distributing additional content, it will be interesting to see how the game will hold up in the weekly sales charts in the upcoming weeks and months. Its holiday companion, Super Mario Maker, was #19 this week with 7 865 units sold (-15%). Unsurprisingly, it will be the first one to leave the Top 20.
During Week 4, Yo-kai Watch Busters was pretty much the only game to see its sales rising. It sold 11 135 units during Week 4, which is +5% more than during Week 3… The Yo-kai franchise certainly shows no sign of slowing down! Finally, Monster Strike is still hovering the 10 000 units/weeks threshold, with 10 623 units sold.
Hardware-wise, something rather unusual happened during Week 4. For the first time in long while, the Nintendo 3DS is not #1 of sales… or #2, for that matter! Indeed, due to a lack of new games this week, and Dragon Quest Builders boosting PlayStation Vita and PS4 sales, the Nintendo 3DS has to do with being #3.
It sold 31 427 units during Week 4, which is slightly worse than during Week 4 in 2015 (when it sold 36 408 units). The combination of January + lack of new releases ended up with a predictable result: a drop in sales. It doesn’t help that the handheld will celebrate its 5th anniversary in just a few weeks either.
As for the Wii U, the inevitable also happened: it dropped below the 10 000 units/weeks threshold during Week 4. Now that the holidays are over, sales naturally dropped, and there’s so much Splatoon and Super Mario Maker can do on their own. There isn’t any major game coming out before The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Pokkén Tournament in March, so sales are only going to get worse in the upcoming weeks.
