Japan: more sales data for Week 2 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 2)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 2, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 482 000 units, which is 44.76% of Week 2 sales. Unsurprisingly, sales are down in this post-New Year week, just like pretty much every year. Media Create point out that the number of games that sold at least 10 000 units dropped from 17 to only 8.

Granted, there were several new releases this week, but they failed to generate much excitement. Out of the 6 new releases this week, 4 were budget re-releases, and they didn’t even chart!

As for Hardware, sales topped 103 000 units, which is 34.74% of Week 1 sales. Just like Software, the drop is pretty harsh, and the main culprit is none other than the Nintendo Switch and its pesky shortages rearing their ugly head yet again. Its sales topped 38 000 units, which is only 25.68% of Week 1… talk about a massive drop!

Day-1 sell-through (Media Create)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for one, lone Nintendo Switch title:

  • [NSW] Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle <SLG> (Nintendo) (¥5.980) – 50%. A good debut, especially as sales should be stronger during the week-end.

Dengeki (Week 2)

This week, Dengeki report that Splatoon 2 sold 39 000 despite shortages, bringing the total since launch to 1 975 000 units. As for Super Mario Odyssey, sales also remained strong, with 26 000 additional units sold this week (1 480 000 units since launch).

During the holiday season and New Year, the market as a whole grew for the second year in a row, this year thanks to the Nintendo Switch. This may look like good news, but that’s only if you don’t take a look at the market share for each platform and publisher.

Dengeki point out that in the Top 200 for that period, Nintendo account 37.6% of total Software sales, and The Pokémon Company account for 22%. Combined, both publishers account for almost 60% of total Software sales on their own (59.6% to be precise).

Revenue-wise, the Nintendo Switch generated almost half of it when it comes to Hardware (50.2%), with 20.5% for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U combined. As for Software, the Top 5 account for no less than 50.2% of total sales during the period, which is a pretty impressive share.

While it’s definitely good news the market is growing again, it definitely would be better if other platforms and companies also enjoyed increased sales (Hardware and Software), so that the market as a whole can be revitalised.
