Japan: more sales data for Week 1 2018, holiday season, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 1)

On Monday, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 1, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 076 000 units, which is 114.09% of Week 52 sales. Unsurprisingly, sales of family-oriented games are on the rise, thanks to New Year and more precisely otoshidama.

Media Create also point out that sales during Week 1 topped 1 million units for the first time since 2015. Compared to the same period last year (January 2nd to January 8th), sales are up by a significant margin: 126.52% of Week 1 2017. The Nintendo Switch was the main driving force behind this increase (replacing the Nintendo 3DS, that was leading last year), with no less than 504 000 units sold for Software.

As for Hardware, sales topped 296 000 units, which is 128.84% of Week 1 sales. Pretty much all relevant platforms saw their sales increase:

  • Nintendo Switch: 108.54% of Week 52 sales
  • Nintendo 3DS: 124.24% of Week 52 sales
  • PlayStation 4: 184.73% of Week 52 sales

Compared to the same period last year, Hardware sales are also up: 137.75% of Week 1 2017 sales. In other words, both Software and Hardware are off to a good start in 2018.

Dengeki (Week 1)

For the third week in a row, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe monopolised the top spots of the Top 50 Software. Splatoon 2 was the best-selling game for the second week in a row, with 133 000 units sold. It’s now sold over 1 936 000 units, and it’s basically guaranteed to reach 2 million units next week (or the following one).

As for Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, they sold 113 000 and 101 000 units respectively, bringing their respective LTD sales to 1 454 000 and 1 259 000 units.

Meanwhile, Mario Party: The Top 100 enjoyed a great second week, with 58 000 units (108 000 units since launch, in just two weeks), and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sold an additional 80 000 units (2 178 000 units since launch).

This week, Dengeki also share some sales data for the holiday season (November to January 1st):

  • Software: 9 860 000 units (-13.1%) / 58.1 billion Yen (-10.9%)
  • Hardware: 2.5 million units (+24.5%) / 71 billion Yen (+48.5%)
  • Total: 129.2 billion Yen (+14.3%)

Software-wise, it’s the same tune as Media Create: lack of significant new releases hurt overall sales. After all, 2016 had Pokémon Sun and Moon, that sold 3.3 million units during that period… that’s quite a lot of units to compensate for.

Hardware-wise, the increase is quite obviously attributed to the success of the Nintendo Switch. It’s the first time in 5 years that Hardware sales reached 70 billion Yen, and the second time in a row that the market as a whole is up during the holiday season.

Once again, Dengeki note that the Nintendo Switch was the driving force behind the market’s expansion during the holiday season. It sold 1 490 000 units during that period (59.4% of total Hardware sales), generating 44.6 billion Yen (62.7% of total Hardware sales). Software-wise, no less than 3.33 million games were sold (33.8% of total Software sales), generating 20.2 billion Yen (34.8% of total Software sales).

Overall, the Nintendo Switch generatd 64.8 billion Yen in revenue, which is no less than 50.2% of total sales during the holiday season. That’s right: half of total sales in November and December were from the Nintendo Switch!

Here’s the best-selling games during the holiday season:
