Japan: more sales data for Week 31 2019, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 32)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for one, lone Nintendo Switch game:

  • [NSW] Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet – Complete Edition (Bandai-Namco) – 50%. A fairly decent debut, though it’s not clear if this is due to strong interest and/or retailers correctly gauging demand.

Dengeki (Week 31)

Dengeki report that Fire Emblem: Three Houses sold about 38 000 units during its second week, bringing total retail sales to 201 000 units. Other than that, there was not much happening in the top of the chart this week. Super Mario Maker 2 sold 36 additional units, bringing total sales to 415 000 units. As for Tsuri Spirits Nintendo Switch Version, it sold 77 000 units as of Week 31, thanks to the 21 000 units sold during that week.

As for new releases, they all sold less than 10 000 units, even when combined. Omega Labyrinth Life sold 9 000 units, with 6 372 units on Nintendo Switch. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was the same, but it sold more on PlayStation 4 with 5 931 units sold.

This week, Dengeki also share data for the current Fiscal Year, and more precisely April to July (April 1st to July 28th). Unfortunately, despite sales slightly improving in July, the market remains quite sluggish:

  • Hardware: 32.6 billion Yen (-8.9%)
  • Software: 32.4 billion Yen (-15.6%)
  • Total: 65 billion Yen (-12.4%), down from 74.2 billion Yen last year during the same period

Dengeki point out that this is the worst the market has been in 10 years. The biggest reason for such poor numbers is, once again, an insufficient number of major titles to pull the market upwards.

For the Nintendo Switch, things will start to turn around this Fall, with the release of big hits like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on September 20th, and Pokémon Sword and Shield on November 15th (among others). But before that, there’s August, and it will be interesting to see if the momentum from July will carry on to the following months or not.
