Japan: more sales data for Week 25 2019, Yo-kai Watch 4 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data report from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 26)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch games (games and platforms listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [NSW] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball <SPT> (Konami) (¥6.980) – 30%. Decent debut, especially if sales do pick up during the weekend;
  • [NSW] [PS4] Jinrui no Minasama he <ADV> (Nippon Ichi Software) (¥6.980) – 40%. Okayish debut, but shipment is most likely not all that big;
  • [NSW] [PS4] Puyo Puyo Champions <PZL> (Sega) (¥1.990). Really poor debut, but not unexpected for the retail release of a game sold 500 Yen at launch (and during sales) on the Nintendo eShop. Such games are not meant to do big numbers anyway!

Dengeki (Week 25)

Dengeki report that Yo-kai Watch 4 sold about 145 000 units at launch, with a relatively good sell-through: 60%. Retailers clearly expected a bit more from the game, but unless sales fall off a cliff during the second week (unlikely given the positive word of mouth), they should have no trouble selling the remaining units and order some more within the next few days.

It’s now been 6 years since the Yo-kai Watch series debuted, but its popularity is clearly not what it once was. Dengeki report that Yo-kai Watch 4 only sold 1/4 of what the previous entry did at launch, and 1/10 of what the best-selling entry did at launch:

  • Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura – 581 000 units (1.34 million units LTD)
  • Yo-kai Watch 2 Genso / Honke – 1 322 000 untis (3 215 000 units LTD)

Long gone are the days when the anime series did huge numbers on TV, and the games went on to sell several million units, with toy sales boosting Bandai’s financial results. Dengeki point out that a new anime series debuted in April, and a new movie is releasing in December, but it’s not clear how big an impact those will have on sales.

Other than Yo-kai Watch 4, there was not much activity in the Top of the charts, still dominated by the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch.

Here’s what the other two Nintendo Switch entries in the Top 50 sold:

  • Summer Pockets (Prototype): 1 711 units, a really poor result considering this is the first console port of the game;
  • Hanayaka Nari, Waga Ichizoku Gentou Nostalgie (Idea Factory): 1 238 units. Another port of an Otome game selling poorly on Nintendo Switch.

The Summer holiday season is just around the corner (it starts in two weeks), and Dengeki are using this as an opportunity to look back at Summer 2018 (July and August). Due to the lack of major hits like Splatoon 2 and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (releasing in Summer 2017), sales took a hit:

  • Hardware: 21.8 billion Yen (-35.9%)
  • Software: 20.1 billion Yen (-53.5%)
  • Total: 41.9 billion Yen (-45.7%)

What’s more, no game sold more than 200 000 units during the period, and sales were at their lowest since 2000.

This Fiscal Year, sales have been quite sluggish so far (more than in 2018), but things should change during the Summer holiday season thanks to popular games… including a certain Super Mario Maker 2, which was released today!
