[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 25, 2019 (June 17th – June 23rd) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 25, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

The biggest release of the week is Yo-kai Watch 4, which is off to a really rough start with only 150 721 units sold at launch. It’s by far the worst debut for the series, including the spin-offs (but excluding Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Edition on Wii U).

It did sell nearly 3 times more than the first entry at launch (about 50 000 units), but a direct comparison doesn’t make much sense because the original sold on the long run, with explosive sales following the debut of the anime series a few months after launch.

There’s various reasons to explain this major drop in sales:

  • the Yo-kai Watch series is nowhere near as popular as it used to be. Sales already took a hit with Yo-kai Watch 3, and things didn’t improve in the slightest for Yo-kai Watch 4 (quite the opposite). As for whether the series will ever recover, the situation looks quite grim at the moment, but it’s too early to say for sure;
  • most of the audience on Nintendo 3DS (kids, primarily) doesn’t seem to have fully migrated to the Nintendo Switch yet;
  • the jump from one generation to another is pretty often rough for many series (Inazuma Eleven suffered from it when it went from Nintendo DS to Nintendo 3DS), and unfortunately, Yo-kai Watch was no exception;
  • the game (and the console it’s on) is a fair bit more expensive than the usual Nintendo 3DS games, making it less likely for kids to buy it (especially as there’s still quite a few weeks left before the Summer holidays kick in).

On a less negative note, word of mouth seems rather positive, which means we can safely expect sales to remain strong in the next few months, especially with the Summer holidays on the horizon). However, it’s clear the series is now way past its prime… It will be quite interesting to see how many units it ended up selling LTD.

Once again, the Nintendo Switch almost ended up grabbing all 10 spots in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu, but a bunch of Yakuza wanted to make sure it didn’t happen. Doraemon: Story of Seasons had a decent second week, with 14 565 units sold (-66%), bringing total sales to 56 795 units. It should have no trouble reaching the 100 000 units milestone, probably in July/August.

Next, let’s take a look at the sales of the usual evergreen titles in the Top 10 from Famitsu, which all saw their sales drop this week due to the drop in Nintendo Switch sales primarily:

  • 04./02. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 8.342 / 3 130.339 (-17%). Sales remain strong and steady;
  • 05./03. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 7.071 / 822.890 (-15%). Its well on its way to the 900 000 units milestone;
  • 06./04. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 6.758 / 2.340.681 (-13%). There’s just no stopping Mario Kart, is there?
  • 07./06. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 4.795 / 1.342.962 (-14%). After a nice bump the previous week, sales are back down, but they remain quite strong;
  • 08./05. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) {2018.11.16} (¥5.980) – 4.702 / 1.558.174 (-22%). Sales dropped this week, but not because of Pokémon Sword and Shield;
  • 10./08. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe <New Super Mario Bros. U \ New Super Luigi U> <ACT> (Nintendo) {2019.01.11} (¥5.980) – 4.044 / 638.709 (-7%). Quite interestingly, it’s the one game that was the least impacted by the drop in sales this week, despite Super Mario Maker 2 launching this Friday!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped again, mostly due to the new promotion that goes live on Friday (3 000 Yen voucher to use on the Nintendo eShop with any Nintendo Switch console purchased). Still, the drop remain somewhat limited with 29 058 units sold: it could have been much worse, considering there’s literally no point in buying the console right now (the voucher is not included in an extremely limited bundle or anything).

Unfortunately, the drop Year on Year is getting worse (29 058 units this year vs 46 750 units last year), though it’s the last week with such a drop: the release of Super Mario Maker 2 on Friday will provide a healthy boost. Once again, total sales in 2019 remain comfortably ahead of total sales in 2018, with about 300 000 units more in 2019. Unless something completely unexpected, this is unlikely to change any time soon.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 8 314 260 units in Japan, and looks more and more likely to reach 9 million units within the next few months.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales remain flat with 2 362 units sold (about 406 units less than the previous week), compared to 7 052 units during the same week last year. The Year on Year drop is now about 106 000 units, with 127 632 units sold in 2019 (323 499 units last week after the same amount of weeks). The Nintendo 3DS has now sold 24 342 596 units in Japan.
