Japan: more sales data for Week 21 2019, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 22)

Unfortunately, no data this week!

Dengeki (Week 21)

Dengeki report that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is back at the top of the Top 50 Software, and so for the very first time in about 3 months (since the week that started on February 25th, basically). It sold about 9 000 additional units this week, which brings total sales to 3.16 million units. Its sales remain quite steady, which is great news for the game… but not so much for the market itself, because that means no game capable of competing with it has appeared six months after its launch.

There were a few releases this week, but they all failed to make a splash.

For example, Resident Evil: Origins Collection only sold 5 000 units on Nintendo Switch, and Assassin’s Creed III Remastered (2 650 units on Nintendo Switch) and Team Sonic Racing (3 533 units on Nintendo Switch) both sold about 6 000 units on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 combined. Therefore, it’s no real surprise that the top of the charts is once again held by the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch.

Here’s some other new entries this week:

  • [NSW] Shiritsu Berbara Gakuen ~Versailles no Bara Re*imagination~ (1 263 units sold)
  • [3DS] Dai Senryaku Daitoua Kouboushi DX ~Dai Niji Sekai Taisen~ (738 units sold)

Despite the 8 games released, both the Hardware and Software markets were pretty sluggish this week:

  • Hardware: 43 000 units (-5.3%)
  • Software: 163 000 units (-0.2%)

Software-wise, nothing sold more than 10 000 units, and Dengeki mention that it was the worst week in the past 20 years. Hardware-wise, the lowest point was reached during the week that started on September 5th in 2016, with only 35 000 units sold.

It’s now been 8 weeks since the new Fiscal Year started, and things are not looking too pretty. So far, there has not big many more big hits than in the past few years. In fact, looking at the Top 3 Software, it’s impossible not to notice something rather worrying:

  1. [PS4] Days Gone (Sony): 175 000 units sold
  2. [NSW] Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission (Bandai-Namco): 124 000 units sold
  3. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo): 109 000 units

That’s right… no game has sold over 200 000 units, which isn’t all that much to begin with…

Also, Dengeki point out that the number of games that sold between 100 000 units and 300 000 units in the Top 100 is the lowest this year: there’s only 3 of them! What’s more, there’s no less than 69 games that sold less than 10 000 units, and those account for no less than 70% of all games released!

Dengeki speculate that this low volume of sales is primarily due to the lack of big titles, which is why they’re hoping that big hits will arrive soon to reinvigorate the entire market.
