[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 41, 2018 (October 8th – October 14th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales data for the Japanese video game market, courtesy of Media Create and Famitsu!

Media Create

The flow of new releases slowed down this week, and so there’s only two new games in the Top 20 provided by Media Create this time around. Unfortunately, they were not released on a Nintendo platform, so there’s nothing much to say about them.

Despite releasing in a slow period, Super Mario Party is selling pretty well. It had a great second week, with 63 451 units sold: that’s a 56% drop, which is rather good. If the game can sell that well during a slow period without public holidays, it certainly makes us wonder how good sales will be during the holiday season. The game has already sold over 200 000 units since launch (206 319 to be precise), and it will reach 300 000 units by the end of the month or in early November depending on sales in the next couple of weeks.

Other Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 saw their sales drop this week, which is pretty normal for October. However, one game did fare better than the others: Minecraft, which sold 10 402 units this week. That’s only a 6% drop Week on Week, which is fairly solid performance during a quiet week. The game has now sold over 326 018 units since launch at retail alone, and should hit 400 000 units sometime in early December.

As for Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, both saw their sales drop by 16% this week. In fact, their sales are extremely close: 8 767 units for the former, and 8 352 units for the latter. Of course, total sales are not really close (2 663 744 units vs 1 797 018 units), but nothing new. Both games are expected to stay in the Top 20 from Media Create for many weeks (and months).

Warriors Orochi 4 sold over 16 000 units this week, but again, most of the sales come from the PlayStation 4 version. This week, the Nintendo Switch version account for only 3 333 units (-45% compared to last week), and the total is now at 34 014 units (as opposed to 138 060 units for the PlayStation 4 version).

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 provided by Media Create are faring:

11./14. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 5.091 / 1.134.189 (-14%). Sales did drop this week, but they remain strong enough;
13./12. [NSW] Dragon Ball FighterZ (Bandai Namco Games) – 4.496 / 35.885 (-45%). Nothing much to say about this game for now, which is following a pretty standard sales trajectory so far;
14./18. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 4.032 / 1.742.905 (-13%). At this rate, it’s quite likely there will be two Pokémon games in the Top 20 in November, when Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! comes out;
15./20. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 3.504 / 1.828.729 (-10%). Just like the other Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 from Media Create, sales are down but remain strong enough;
16./15. [NSW] FIFA 19 (Electronic Arts) – 3.382 / 24.820 (-35%). It looks like sales are on about to stabilize;
18./19. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! (Bandai Namco Games) – 3.258 / 213.085 (-27%). It’s still hanging on in the Top 20 from Media Create, despite the lack of holidays;
20./22. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo) – 2.971 / 629.157. Makes its comeback in the Top 20 this week!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are remarkably steady with 44 070 units sold. That’s roughly 1 700 units less than during Week 40, which is a fairly solid performance for a slow week without any releases. So far, the console is still staying in the 35-50 000 units/week range, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon.

That being said, the upcoming release of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and more precisely their bundles on November 16th, may have a negative impact on Hardware sales. After all, many fans are most likely going to wait for those two bundles to get a Nintendo Switch. Of course, the negative impact is only going to be temporary, with sales simply “delayed” by a week or two.

This week again, Nintendo Switch sales are up Year on Year, though not by much (about 4 000 units this time around). The total for 2018 is still ahead of the total for 2017, though Week 43 (with Super Mario Odyssey, last year) is going to bring the total for both years pretty close to each other. Of course, this will be but temporary, but it’s still worth pointing out.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales are basically flat this week (-400 units) with 6 946 units sold. That’s over 3 times below Week 41 sales (20 745 units), which is more or less the different between total sales for this year and last year (409 000 units vs 1 255 187 units).
