[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 5, 2018 (January 29th – February 4th) [Top 50]

This week see the arrival of only two entries in the Top 20 Software from Media Create, and one of them is on a Nintendo platform. That game is none other than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which had a rather decent opening debut with 13 922 units sold.

Those sales are nothing mindblowing, but it’s still a decent performance, especially compared to similar late ports on Nintendo Switch. Now it remains to be seen if it’s going to keep selling on the long run like Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 or FIFA 18.

As Nintendo keeps on increasing the weekly shipments for the Nintendo Switch, many games are enjoying steady sales. That’s the case of Splatoon 2, with 25 758 units sold this week: a spectacular increase of… 0% week on week. Unfortunately, it missed the 2 million units milestone by a hair… or rather, 2 432 units (it’s currently standing at 1 997 568 units sold at retail).

Meanwhile, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is selling pretty well, with 21 279 additional units for Week 5. That’s only a 18% drop week on week, which seems to indicate word of mouth is working. As of this week, the unlikely Strategy game from Ubisoft has sold over 100 000 units in Japan (114 059 units to be precise).

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey, they’re among the many Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 that enjoyed steady sales, with 21 263 units (-3%) and 15 978 units (-4%) sold this week. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is nearing the 1.5 million units milestone, while Super Mario Odyssey is aiming for 2 million units (that it will definitely reach this very year).

While other Nintendo Switch games saw steady sales, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the few that saw a noticeable increase in sales (+24%), though it’s not clear why. One thing is certain: it’s not quite done selling, and as mentioned several times before, it’s basically guaranteed to sell at least 1 million units on Nintendo Switch alone (sometime this year).

On Nintendo 3DS, Software sales are also pretty steady. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sold 11 028 units this week (-13%), and it doesn’t look like it’s going to drop from the Top 20 Software any time soon. Meanwhile, sales of Mario Party: The Top 100 actually went up this week (+8%), with 150 000 units sold since launch (149 345 to be precise). It looks like 200 000 units LTD (minimum) is a lock for this game.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 11./09. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters 2: Hihou Legend Banbarayaa – Sword / Magnum (Level 5) – 6.053 / 496.905 (-22%). It should reach 500 000 units next week;
• 12./14. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo)  – 4.453 / 360.484 (+1%). It just keeps on getting closer and closer to the 400 000 units milestone!
• 13./15. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 4.391 / 391.086 (+0%). It will reach 400 000 units within the next couple of weeks. It’s certainly interesting to see that game still hanging in the Top 20 almost 10 months after its release…
• 14./00. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 3.767 / 110.217. New shipments have allowed this one to make a comeback in the Top 20. We expect it to keep selling steadily like it’s been doing since launch;
• 15./13. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 3.731 / 218.461 (-22%). It looks like the game is once again suffering from shortages, at least at some retailers;
• 18./20. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 3.180 / 211.119 (+1%). It looks like this one is still riding on the Monster Hunter World wave…
• 19./23. [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo) – 3.158 / 181.254. Rex-Rex wants to you know his game isn’t done selling yet, and that in fact, it will reach 200 000 units within the next couple of months (most likely in March);
• 20./21. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 2.775 / 371.535. Thought this one had dropped from the Top 20 Software for good? Wrong!

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales remain steady: Nintendo did ship more units this week, but the increase is pretty limited. Still, shipments are significantly bigger than during similarly slow weeks last year, which is a positive sign that shows Nintendo is finally getting the shipment situation in order.

It looks like we’re seeing the last few weeks of continued shortages for the Nintendo Switch, though it’s still too early to celebrate. At the very least, getting one has become much easier than last year, especially if you’re willing to try out a few stores.

With over 49 000 units sold this week, the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 300 000 units in 2018 alone. As shipments keep increasing, and the Software line-up keeps improving, sales are only going to go up from now on.

Meanwhile, Nintendo 3DS sales seem to have flattened out, with 11 461 units sold this week. Unfortunately, sales are not going to improve any time soon: nothing is releasing until next month, and the next truly major release is Detective Pikachu on March 23rd.
