[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 40, 2016 (Oct. 3 – 9) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

Last week, Capcom released Monster Hunter Stories on Nintendo 3DS: a turn-based RPG aimed at kids. How did this spin-off fare during its opening week-end? Pretty well: Media Create reports that it sold 140 603 units during the first two days. That’s significantly better than most expectations and pre-order data were suggesting. In fact, some retailers even ran out of copies and had to order more.

That being said, there was no widespread shortages, as according to retailers, Capcom shipped about 300 000 units for the opening week-end. That means there are about 160 000 units left to sell: that may seem like a lot, but nothing really worrying. First of all, Monday was a public holiday, so the usual Week 2 drop shouldn’t be as important as during any other week.

But more importantly, Monster Hunter Stories is a game aimed at kids, part of a cross-media effort (with the anime series). Sales on the long-run are more important, especially those during the holiday period. It’s only in January that we will be able to accurately say whether Monster Hunter Stories is a success, or yet another game to add in the pile of failed cross-media attempts. At least, the game is off to a rather good start.

Talking of cross-media projects, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura sold 12 000 additional units this week, bringing the total to 1 273 183 units since launch. That means there’s still 50 000 units left from the second first week shipment, which should be completely sold out sometime in November.

For Week 40, sales for some Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games were surprisingly stable:

• 07./08. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 6.810 / 144.629 (-1%). If sales are that good during slow weeks, that bodes pretty well for the holiday period where a game like Minecraft is bound to sell well (the PS Vita version certainly did last year);
• 10./13. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter (GungHo Online Entertainment) – 5.246 / 190.559 (+6%). Despite a disappointing debut, this game hasn’t left the Media Create Top 20 since launch. It looks like it mightt leave it until after the holiday period;
• 12./14. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 4.944 / 449.076 (+5%). Another game that saw its sales rise this week. It will reach 450 000 units sold next week (it only missed that threshold by 56 units this week!), and 500 000 units before the end of the year;
• 13./15. [3DS] Dragon Ball: Fusions <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) – 4.138 / 174.184 (-5%). Sales remain pretty stable for this game, one of the best-selling Dragon Ball titles on Nintendo 3DS… and the holiday period hasn’t even started yet.

As for Super Battle For Money Sentouchuu: Kyuukyoku no Shinobu to Battle Player Choujou Kessen!, it made its comeback in the Top 20 at #15. According to Media Create, it sold 3 720 units this week, and 18 830 units since launch.

Splatoon is another game that made its comeback in the Top (at #20), with 3 320 units sold (1 479 181 units since launch). Unfortunately, it’s no longer the game with the most week in the Top 20 this year… Finally, Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire is still going with 3 401 units sold (-19%).

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, it’s same old, same old for the Wii U. Sales are slightly up this week (2 545 units vs 2 111 units), but nothing to write home about. It’s clear that Nintendo’s home console isn’t going to do much better than that during non-holiday weeks. Next week, Paper Mario: Color Splash will be released, but its impact on Wii U sales should be rather limited (in part because fans most likely already own one).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, the release of Monster Hunter Stories had a small but visible impact on sales. According to Media Create, Nintendo’s handheld sold 29 592 units during Week 40 (+2 000 units), and almost took back its spot as best-selling console from the PlayStation 4.

What’s pretty interesting about Week 40 2016 sales is that they’re significantly better than last year during the same week (about 6 000 units more). And it’s pretty clear that is only due to the Nintendo 2DS: without this new model, sales would be down Year on Year. It may not be setting the charts on fire, and it will not allow the Nintendo 3DS to reach 30 million units LTD, but its impact on sales is more than noticeable.

It’s not quite clear how long Nintendo 3DS sales will remain above their 2015 levels, but in the mean time, Nintendo must be pretty happy about the extra money. But as mentioned several times before, it’s truly during the holiday period, and also with the launch of Pokémon Sun and Moon, that the Nintendo 2DS is truly going to shine.

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 272 042 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 727 958 units during the next 12 weeks. In other words, it needs 60 663 units / week, on average.
