[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 3, 2017 (Jan. 16 – Jan. 22) [Top 50]

This week, we finally have the first entry of the year for Nintendo platforms, and it’s Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World on Nintendo 3DS. This port of the Wii U game enjoyed decent sales at launch, with 39 555 units sold according to Media Create. As comparison, the Wii U version sold 33 821 units (according to Famitsu), so this Nintendo 3DS version did slightly better (but nothing to write home about, unfortunately).

Yoshi’s Woolly World on Wii U ended up selling over 100 000 units LTD (according to Famitsu), and there’s no doubt Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World will reach that in the upcoming weeks (though it might take a little while, as we’re in one of the slowest periods of the year for video game sales).

Will Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World catch up with Yoshi’s New Island (the other Yoshi game on Nintendo 3DS, and a brand new entry?), which sold 66 225 units at launch and 258 847 units LTD (according to Famitsu)? It doesn’t look likely, unfortunately, but it’s a bit too early to tell exactly where it will end up.

This week, again, sales dropped for most games, though the drop is more limited than last week. For Pokémon Sun and Moon, we have -34% with 21 036 units sold this week (and 3 092 277 units since launch).Now that the holiday period is truly over, sales are not all that impressive anymore (but still solid).

Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki managed to hold better than the rest, with -10% this week and 20 831 units sold (629 229 units since launch). If it keeps selling at this pace, and Level-5 doesn’t announce anything that could cut its sales short, it might end up selling 1 million units before the end of the year.

As for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, it’s still selling at a steady pace, though the impressive holiday sales are well behind us now. Media Create reports 14 285 units sold for this week, and 928 969 units since launch. Sales should top 1 million units at retail within the first half of 2017.

Next, we have Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon!! at #10 with 8 638 units sold (269 727 units since launch). It’s one of those titles that’s truly going to shine during weeks with public holidays, but thanks to low January/February sales, we can probably expect it to stick around for a couple more weeks.

• 15./13. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 5.033 / 112.797 (-21%). Despite the holiday period being over, this one doesn’t seem to leave the Top 20 any time soon (though new entries definitely will push it out in the upcoming weeks);
• 16./12. [3DS] Miitopia (Nintendo) {2016.12.08}  – 4.775 / 156.947 (-35%). Sales remain rather week, and it’s been clear for a while that this would not be a Tomodachi Life 2 sales-wise;
• 18./16. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 3.732 / 279.716 (-24%). After a pretty good run in 2016, this one seems ready to drop from the Top 20.

Like we expected, the Wii U dropped below the 1000 units/weeks threshold this week in Japan, with 794 units sold. Since it’s pretty much the end of the line for the console, we can expect sales to drop even lower in the upcoming weeks.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped again this week: Media Create reports 26 057 units sold (about 8 000 units less than last week). That’s basically 60% of Week 2 2016 sales, further confirming the drop Year on Year. In fact, total sales for 2017 will most definitely drop below the total for 2016 as soon as next week.

Unsurprisingly, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World didn’t have any impact on Nintendo 3DS Sales whatsoever.
