[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 18, 2017 (May 01 – May 07) [Top 50]
Media Create
Week 18 was the infamous “Golden Week” in Japan, but once again, it was another “Golden Weak” we got. Software-wise, many games saw their sales increase, but there’s nothing really impressive in there for the most part. That being said, Nintendo platforms almost managed to grab all 10 spots in the Top 10 from Media Create!
After a strong debut, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had a great second week with 90 652 units sold: that’s -68% compared to launch week. It’s most likely going to remain the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch title in the upcoming weeks, at least until ARMS comes out on June 16th. Since launch, over 375 000 copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have been sold, and the 400 000 units threshold should be reached next week.
Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X had a similar second week drop (-68%), with 31 271 units sold. It’s already sold over 100 000 units, and should be able to sell at least 200 000 units LTD. The second week is pretty good, but the real test starts from next week: it will need steady sales to catch up with the LTD of its two predecessors.
Next, let’s take a look at the games that benefited the most from the Golden Week:
- 03./03. [3DS] Monster Hunter XX (Capcom) – 30.338 / 1.451.544 (+9%). Since Monster Hunter is a pretty popular mainstream franchise, it’s no surprise sales went up during the Golden Week;
- 06./11. [3DS] Mario Sports Superstars (Nintendo) – 10.975 / 86.477 (+66%). A kids-friendly game, seing a big increase in sales during the Golden Week? Well, I never! It should be able to easily top 100 000 units sold before the end of the month: a surprisingly good result after the mediocre debut;
- 09./17. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 8.134 / 1.035.534 (+96%). This one was already selling steadily, but the Golden Week provided a welcome boost;
- 12./16. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 6.940 / 3.256.775 (+64%). What would be the Golden Week without Pokémon? Sales remain pretty healthy so far;
- 15./20. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level 5) – 5.363 / 716.405 (+68%). Sales have been steady in the past few weeks, and naturally, the Golden Week had a positive impact;
- 16./29. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) – 5.314 / 2.768.991. You know it’s a holiday week when good ol’ Mario Kart 7 pops back up in the Top 20!
- 17./23. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 5.120 / 173.009. Another games that makes its comeback in the Top 20 thanks to the Golden Week… now that it was very far to begin with;
- 19./39. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 4.005 / 560.524. This one made quite the jump from #39 to #19! With over 560 524 units sold to date, this second entry on Nintendo 3DS isn’t nearly as successful as Kirby Triple Deluxe, but remains a pretty strong seller, and should end around 600 000 units LTD.
And now, the sales of the Nintendo Switch launch titles:
- 04./04. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 21.926 / 442.867 (-13%). Nintendo Switch sales dropped this week (again due to shortages), but this one didn’t drop too much and sales remained rather strong. So far, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hasn’t had a negative impact (quite the opposite).
Quite interestingly, the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the games that benefited the most from the Golden Week, with sales increasing by 58%. It sold 7 121 units this week, and 116 313 units since lauch. That puts both versions combined to 559 177 units.
- 08./07. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 9.488 / 205.446 (-3%). Sales were stable during the Golden Week, allowing this title to reach the 200 000 units threshold. It looks like 1-2-Switch has the potential to sell on the long run, and we will see during the upcoming weeks if that’s truly the case or not;
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia keeps selling quite well, and is drawing nearer to the 200 000 units threshold. It’s currently sitting at 169 154 units since launch, after selling 14 765 units (-35%) this week. Sales are hardly impressive, but at the very least they’re not downright bad. However, the upcoming weeks are not going to be pretty, as we enter one of the slowest periods of the year for video game sales.
As for Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax, it had a good second week, with 10 632 units sold (-3%). Sales were stable thanks to Bandai-Namco shipping enough copies at launch to meet demand, and so retailers were not caught unprepared (though some of them did run out of copies at one point). With 69 723 units sold since launch, Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax is bound to sell at least 100 000 units LTD.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch didn’t really benefit from the Golden Week all that much, since the console is still facing severe shortages. In other words, it’s the same old song: Nintendo is only selling what they can ship to retailers, not one unit more. This week, 47 911 units were sold, which is quite the drop from last week (which had the launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, though).
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Nintendo Switch shortages are going to end any time soon. That means sales should remain steady in the upcoming weeks, even though we’re entering one of the slowest periods of the year for video game sales. Of course, it will all depend on how many units Nintendo can ship on a weekly basis.
The next major release on Nintendo Switch is ARMS on June 16th, as Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers (May 26th) and Seiken Densetsu Collection (June 1st) are not expected to move Hardware.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales went slightly up this week, with 26 981 units sold. That’s more or less the same as last year during the same period, something Nintendo is certainly not going to complain about. It’s a bit too early for the New Nintendo 2DS XL announcement to have any sort of impact: it’s something we will only get to see in late June / early July.
Finally, Wii U sales dropped to 397 units, and became the worst-selling console in Japan due to the Xbox One’s incredibly boost.
