Japan – Media Create sales for Week 42, 2015 (Oct. 12-18) [Top 50]

For Week 42 in Japan, we only have one new entry on Nintendo platforms: 7th Dragon III code:VFD, which came out on Nintendo 3DS. It had a pretty decent launch with 72 477 units sold during the first four days. According to Famitsu, around 60-80% of all units sent to retailers were effectively sold, which is good news: they shouldn’t have to heavily discount the game to get through the first shipment.
However, 7th Dragon III code:VFD performed worse than its predecessor (7th Dragon 2020-II on PSP), which already didn’t sell nearly as much as the previous entry. Those sales are nowhere near the “Press the panic button” level, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if SEGA wasn’t quite satisfied by them. Will good word of month help the game during the upcoming weeks? We should see that pretty soon!
In the rest of the charts, we have several games on Nintendo platforms which increased their sales this week (due to Monday being a public holiday): Splatoon leads the pack with +11%, followed by Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (+1%) and Rhythm Heaven: The Best + (which makes its comeback in the Top 20).
Unfortunately, there isn’t much else to say Software-wise, as October is one of the weakest months of the year when it comes to video games sales. After a rather disappointing debut, Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash is still selling rather weakly, with -48% this week and 6 places lost. The drop in sales isn’t quite as bad as usual for a second week, but that’s most likely because sales were not that good to begin with…
Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS is slightly up this week, primarily because of the holiday on Monday and 7th Dragon III code:VFD. It sold 24 252 units during Week 42, compared to 23 566 units during Week 41. Compared to last year, the drop in sales is still quite noticeable (once again, this is due to the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS during Week 41 in 2014).
As for the Wii U, its sales are also up this week thanks to the holiday on Monday. Since Splatoon sales increased by 11%, it’s pretty clear this is the game new Wii U owners picked up with their brand new console. So far, the Wii U is holding quite well above the 10 000 units/week threshold, but will it stay there until the start of the holiday period?
