Splatoon: over 1 million units sold worldwide

Today, Nintendo made a rather squidtastic announcement: Splatoon has sold over 1 million units worldwide! The game managed to reach that milestone in less than a month (which is rather impressive for a brand new IP on a struggling platform), with strong sales in all regions:

– 476 000 units in North America (retail + digital);
– 368 000 units in Japan, where the game was frequently sold out at most retailers during the weeks that followed the launch;
– 230 000 units in Europe;
– 20 000 units in Australia and New Zealand.

Here’s what Reggie Fils-Aimé had to say about this:

“Ever since Splatoon launched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition. This milestone puts us in a nice position as we prepare to launch 11 more exclusive Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games before the end of the year, plus amiibo, digital offerings and games from our third-party partners.”

Here’s two pictures sent on social media to celebrate:

And to celebrate, Nintendo revealed a web commercial for the game in Japan:
