[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 12, 2019 (March 18th – March 24th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 12, 2019 in Japan.

Important note: this is the last week Media Create share sales data with non-subscribers. Starting with Week 13, 2019, they will only share the Top 10 Software with no sales data, and no Hardware sales data at all. Due to this, we will switch to Famitsu data starting next week, with Top 10 Software + Hardware sales on Wednesday at the usual time, and Top 30 Software on Thursday.

It’s not clear how long Famitsu will keep sharing data now that public Media Create data is no more, and whether they will change their schedule for sales data releases. Should there be any change, we will make sure to notify you in one of these posts as soon as possible.

Media Create

Week 12 saw the release of quite a few games, and unlike Week 11, they did make an impression this time around. In fact, the Top 6 titles of the Top 20 provided by Media Create are all new releases!

Let’s start with Super Robot Wars T, which sold about 132 000 units during launch week, with 44 051 units on Nintendo Switch. It’s slightly below what the previous entry opened at, but still a somewhat satisfactory result for Bandai-Namco. After all, the Nintendo Switch version almost completely compensated for the lack of PlayStation Vita version (though only if you compare it with last year’s entry). It will be interesting to see how sales evolve with future entries.

Here’s how the previous two entries in the series fared:

02./00. [PS4] Super Robot Wars V # <SLG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2017.02.23} (¥8.600) – 100.154 / NEW
03./00. [PSV] Super Robot Wars V # <SLG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2017.02.23} (¥7.600) – 83.733 / NEW

01./00. [PS4] Super Robot Wars X # <SLG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2018.03.29} (¥8.600) – 89.259 / NEW
03./00. [PSV] Super Robot Wars X # <SLG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2018.03.29} (¥7.600) – 54.042 / NEW

Next: Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy! is off to strong debut with 49 500 units sold during the first few days on the two platforms it was released on. The Nintendo Switch version was the most popular one, with 28 509 units. That’s quite better than previous entries in the series at launch (though far from the series’ heyday), and this is just a remaster (not a brand new entry):

10./00. [NDS] Cid to Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon: Toki Wasure no Meikyuu + (Square Enix) {2008.10.30} – 26,190 / NEW

10./00. [WII] Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon: the Labyrinth of Forgotten Time (Square-Enix) {2007.12.13} – 40,580 / NEW

This shows Square-Enix there’s still interest in the series, which will hopefully lead to a new entry being made. Of course, this would also depend on how the game sells on the long run (not just launch week), but it’s a bit too early to say for sure how it’s going to fare. Since Dungeon RPGs target a rather niche audience, sales are expected to slow down rather quickly (especially with used sales eating in the sales potential of the game).

As for Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland, it’s off to a good start with about 40 000 units sold on the two platforms it was released on, including 12 473 units for the Nintendo Switch version (which seems to have absorbed the remaining PlayStation Vita audience, if the data of the previous game is anything to go by). That’s better than Atelier Lydie and Suelle, and nearly as good as Atelier Firis, but still quite a way behind Atelier Sophie.

02./00. [PS4] Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2015.11.19} (¥7.344) – 30.759 / NEW
03./00. [PSV] Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2015.11.19} (¥6.264) – 25.805 / NEW
13./00. [PS3] Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2015.11.19} (¥7.344) – 11.542 / NEW

03./00. [PS4] Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2016.11.02} (¥6.800) – 27.372 / NEW
05./00. [PSV] Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2016.11.02} (¥5.800) – 16.153 / NEW

00./00. [PS4] Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2017.12.21} (¥7.300) – 21.129 / NEW
00./00. [PSV] Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2017.12.21} (¥6.300) – 7.585 / NEW
00./00. [NSW] Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) {2017.12.21} (¥7.300) – 6.632 / NEW

Unfortunately, sales will most likely drop sharply next week: that’s how the vast majority of JRPGs fare during their second week after all.

Finally, Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Scarlet sold about 20 000 units at launch, with 7 075 units on Nintendo Switch. That’s about 3 times less than the original version (which sold about 60 000 units at launch), but that’s hardly a surprise for an expanded re-release. Just like Atelier Lulua, sales should drop sharply during the second week, and it’s basically guaranteed the Nintendo Switch version will drop off the Top 20 from Media Create.

Next, let’s take a look at the other games in the Top 20 from Media Create:

  • 07./04. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 21.008 / 2.974.153 (+1%). Sales are perfectly flat, just like Nintendo Switch Hardware sales! It will reach 3 million units sold during Week 14 at the very latest;
  • 08./05. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo) – 17.827 / 534.367 (+5%). Sales remain strong;
  • 12./06. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe <RCE> (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 12.504 / 2.190.792 (+11%). Nice bump this week thanks to the public holiday on Thursday;
  • 14./07. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 10.727 / 1.546.944 (+6%). It just keeps on selling, and the reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield didn’t change that;
  • 15./11. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo)- 9.288 / 1.064.507 (+10%). Nice holiday bump for a game that is quite clearly not done selling;
  • 16./12. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 9.136 / 649.961 (+15%). There clearly is no stopping the Minecraft fever in Japan…
  • 17./10. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) – 8.585 / 1.334.410 (+1%). It just keeps on selling and selling;
  • 18./13. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 7.891 / 2.970.723 (+5%). It’s been outsold by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and should reach the 3 million units milestone several weeks after it.

Media Create Software Week 12 2019

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are perfectly flat with about 56 000 units sold. The public holiday on Thursday didn’t have any noticeable impact on sales, and neither did the new releases (that was expected), but it’s hardly a negative. If anything, it’s pretty good news for Nintendo that its console is selling so well without a major system seller to boost sales.

What’s more, the console just keeps on selling more than last year during the same period. During Week 12, 2018, “only” 50 000 consoles were sold, as opposed to 56 000 units this year. It’s not clear what sort of impact Yoshi’s Crafted World will have, but it’s pretty safe to expect sales to either remain stable or go up. But even if they were to drop, it’s highly unlikely the console will start selling less than it did during the same week in 2018, since sales dropped to 44 000 units during Week 13 that year.

The Nintendo Switch has now sold 919 000 units this year (nearly 300 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks), which means it will reach its first million in 2019 during Week 14. That’s much faster than in 2018, and it’s yet another sign of how much better the console been selling this year. And once the heavy-hitters start showing up, comparisons with 2018 are going to get even more lopsided.

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS saw its sales increase slightly this week. Of course, that increase is quite limited: 7 943 units vs 5 725 units, but it shows public holidays still have a positive impact on sales. Of course, it’s not going to change anything in the long run: the handheld is truly on its way to retirement after all.
