[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 11, 2019 (March 11th – March 17th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 11, 2019 in Japan.

Media Create

Week 11 saw the releases of quite a few games, but they all failed to make a big impact. That’s especially true on Nintendo platforms, where several of them did not even chart. Take Destiny Connect for example: it did not chart on any platform. Same for The Caligula Effect: Overdose (Nintendo Switch-only) and Blade Arcus Rebellion from Shining.

Since the game ranked #20 sold 2 760 units, that means all those games sold 2 759 units or less. A really poor result, made even worse by the fact they sold pretty poorly during their first day, and despite shipments that were most definitely really small. Even if Media Create were to combine multiplatform releases, it’s not guaranteed at all those new releases would have charted.

The only new release that managed to chart on Nintendo platforms is Samurai Warriors 4 DX, which sold about 10 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. The Nintendo Switch version sold 4 704 units, which is about 600 units less than the PlayStation 4 version. The gap between the two platforms is smaller than usual for this kind of game, most definitely because it’s a re-release and the original is already available on Sony’s console.

Next, let’s take a look at the other games in the Top 20 from Media Create:

  • 04./02. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} (¥7.200) – 20.706 / 2.953.145 (-12%). It will reach 3 million units within the next few weeks, and will outsell Splatoon 2 at retail next week;
  • 05./03. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo) – 16.997 / 516.540 (-15%). It’s now sold over 500 000 units, and is on its way to the 1 million units milestone. It’s not yet clear if Super Mario Maker 2 will have any impact on its sales;
  • 06./04. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 11.288 / 2.178.288 (-8%). Steady sales;
  • 07./05. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 10.112 / 1.536.216 (-11%)
  • 10./07. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 8.479 / 1.325.825 (-14%). Nintendo Switch sales are down this week, so it’s no surprise this game also saw its sales drop;
  • 11./08. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 8.429 / 1.055.218 (-9%). It reached 1 million units several weeks ago, but the party definitely isn’t over yet;
  • 12./09. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 7.955 / 640.825 (-5%). Steady sales despite Hardware sales dropping this week;
  • 13./10. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 7.516 / 2.962.831 (-3%). It will also reach 3 million units within the next few weeks (most likely in April);
  • 19./19. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo) {2018.03.16} (¥5.980) – 2.883 / 743.782 (+3%). It’s now been a year since this game was released, and it’s still hanging around in the Top 20 from Media Create. It only left it for a couple of weeks, to boot!
  • 20./20. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 2.760 / 1.962.818 (+2%). It would have dropped out of the Top 20 from Media Create if so many of the new releases hadn’t flopped…

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped back to more “normal” numbers following two weeks of unusually high sales (primarily due to the reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield). It sold 57 000 units, which is a fairly solid performance, especially given how nearly all the new releases downright flopped this week.

Since Thursday is a public holiday, it’s definitely not farfetched to expect sales to bounce back up next week. And given the following week will have Pay Day (and Yoshi’s Crafted World), sales may not drop again until early April.

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold 54 342 units during the same week, in 2018. Not only sales are slightly better this year, Week 11 2018 saw the release of Kirby Star Allies, which gave a healthy bump to Hardware sales. The gap in YTD sales between 2018 and 2019 keeps growing, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon, despite a rather lackluster line-up so far in 2019 (though it’s not like there is not any game releasing).

And once again, Ninteod 3DS sales are perfectly flat with 5 725 units sold (a whopping 5 units more than last week!). The handheld has been left on auto-pilot for a while now, and it’s definitely interesting to see how stable its sales are week after week.
