[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 9, 2020 (February 24 – March 01) [Top 30]
Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 9, 2020 in Japan.

Week 9 saw the release of a few games, but only one managed to make it into the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu: Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. What’s more, only the Nintendo Switch version managed to chart, with 11 610 units sold.
That’s worse than the Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2, which sold 15 200 units on Nintendo Switch alone (26 571 units at launch on PlayStation 4). A pretty poor performance overall, which shows that players may be growing tired of the endless stream of collections and remasters; the previous week, the Devil May Cry Triple Pack almost missed the Top 30.
While the new releases failed to make a splash, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are in top form this week, in major part due to the Coronavirus. An increasing number of people are asked to just stay at home (that includes most students, who are getting two extra weeks of “vacations”), and those same people do need something to pass the time.
And what better way to spend the time than with some video games? Quite a lot of people seem to think that way, which is why sales are up for nearly all the games in the Top 10. There’s a couple of exceptions:
- Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, released the previous week (over 28 000 units sold this week, including 8 889 units on Nintendo Switch. LTD sales: over 190 000 units, including 55 304 units on Nintendo Switch);
- Ring Fit Adventure, still suffering from shortages. It sold 8 958 units this week, bringing LTD sales to over 700 000 units (704 963 units to be precise).
No doubt the full Top 30 on Thursday will show even more increases for evergreen titles.
The biggest increase is for Super Mario Party, with 7 650 units sold (+70%, 1 354 554 units LTD). Mario Kart 8 Deluxe isn’t far behind with +63% and 11 958 units sold this week (2 793 235 units LTD).
As for Pokémon Sword and Shield, it’s back at the top of the Top 10 Software with 24 886 units sold (3 470 674 units LTD); the increase for that game is more limited (+35%), due to sales already being at a high level. The game seems to have a lot more long-term potential than previous Pokémon games, and has already put an end to the downward trend of the series over the past decade.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales went back up, due to both the Coronavirus (as explained above for Software), but also because of anticipation for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Unfortunately, said Coronavirus is also impacting the production and shipments, limiting the amount of OG models sent to retailers (the Lite model is still readily available for the most part).
The Nintendo Switch sold 53 098 units this week, with 37 784 units for the Lite model, and 15 314 units for the OG model. Until production and shipments return to normal levels, the Lite model is bound to keep outselling the OG model. But unfortunately, shortages are inevitably going to impact the Lite model once Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out before that happens.
Due to shortages impacting the OG model, sales are once again down Year on Year: the Nintendo Switch sold 66 453 units last year during the same week. The gap between 2020 and 2019 sales is still fairly sizeable (916 356 units vs. 739 457 units), and thanks to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it’s unlikely 2020 sales are going to fall behind 2019 sales any time soon. Unfortunately, shortages from April onwards are going to significantly slow down sales.
LTD sales for the Nintendo Switch now stand at 12 299 787 units, with 1 423 065 units for the Lite model, and 10 876 722 units for the OG model.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales didn’t increase all that much (it may as well be statistical noise), with 1 131 units (vs. 1 025 units the previous week, and 6 084 units during Week 9 2019). YTD sales now stand at 10 549 units (vs. 65 690 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and LTD sales at 24 506 863 units.
