[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 41, 2019 (October 7th – October 13th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 41, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 41 was relatively quiet for the video games market in Japan, with only two entries in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu.

The best-selling game this week is one of them: Disney Tsum Tsum Festival on Nintendo Switch, which is off to a satisfying start with 30 350 units sold. The holiday season is when this game will truly shine, and unless sales drop like a rock and never go back up, we can expect some signficant sales for it. At the very least, it should be able to sell over 100 000 units with relative ease.

Unfortunately for Level-5, Yo-kai Watch 1 for Nintendo Switch failed to make a splash, with only 9 426 units sold. Of course, it’s not too surprising for a mere HD port of a game originally released on Nintendo 3DS, especially with how many improvement subsequent games offer. It’s highly to sell much in the long run, unlike the original version.

Here’s how the other games in the Top 10 fared this week:

  • 02./01. [NSW] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age S – Definitive Edition (Square Enix) {2019.09.27} – 25.292 / 386.163 (-56%). Sales remain good enough, and will top 400 000 units next week;
  • 05./03. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo) – 9.338 / 212.918 (-43%). Sales are rather unimpressive so far, but still fairly solid;
  • 07./09. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 7.696 / 2.488.259 (-14%). It will reach the next milestone, 2.5 million units at retail, within the next couple of weeks;
  • 08./10. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 7.308 / 961.796 (-14%). Slowly but surely making its way to the 1 million units milestone;
  • 09./06. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2019.06.28} (¥5.980) – 7.196 / 661.481 (-27%). It will reach 700 000 units sometime in November;
  • 10./08. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate # <FTG> (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} (¥7.200) – 6.732 / 3.295.636 (-27%). Sales remain strong ahead of the holiday season.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales once again dropped due to October not being the best of months for game consoles sales, a lack of notable releases, and unfortunately the typhoon that severaly impacted part of the country. Still, they remain at a satisfactory level, with 56 680 units, with 17 316 units for the Nintendo Switch Lite model specifically.

Last week, a special bundle including the OG Nintendo Switch Model (with special design) and a copy of Disney Tsum Tsum was released, which is part of the reason the OG model sold more than the Lite one. Unfortunately, it’s not clear how many units that bundle sold: all we know is that Day 1 sales were better than expected for retailers.

Despite the drop, Nintendo Switch sales are still comfortably ahead of 2018 sales, with only 44 572 units for Week 41 last year. So far, the console has sold 2 664 459 units this year, which is about 800 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (1 853 679 units to be precise). This brings total sales to 9 554 005 units. The 10 million units milestone is in sight!

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it very narrowly avoided 3 digits sales, with 1 041 units sold this week, which is even worse than last week (1 303 units sold) and last year (6 430 units sold). So far, the handheld has sold 167 394 units this year, as opposed to 453 293 units last year after the same amount of weeks. LTD sales now stand at 24 472 898 units.
