[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 17, 2019 (April 22nd – April 28th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 17, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 17 saw the release of several games from publishers looking to take advantage of the Golden Week (which effectively started on Saturday, but its effects will only truly be felt in Week 18 data). All the new entries on Nintendo Switch are late ports of games already available on other platforms, but they ended up pulling respectable numbers.

Let’s start with Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which is off to a great start with 20 366 units sold during the first 4 days according to Famitsu. In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold 98 337 units at launch (and at least 167 739 units LTD), and so the Nintendo Switch version did pretty well for a late port. What’s more, it seems to have sold fairly well during the Golden Week, but we will have to wait a bit longer before getting those numbers.

Swort Art Online: Hollow Realization – Deluxe Edition is also off to a decent start, with 17 618 units sold during the first few days. It’s not nearly as much as the initial release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita (140 000 units at launch), but still a good performance for a late port coming more than 2.5 years after the other platforms. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to sell much beyond the Golden Week…

Finally, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen sold 10 207 units during its launch, which is nearly as much as the PlayStation 4 port at launch (about 12 000 units). This comes as quite the surprise, as late ports of games already ported on another platform generally tend to perform rather poorly (and this is not only the case on Nintendo Switch specifically). Just like Swort Art Online: Hollow Realization – Deluxe Edition, it’s unlikely to sell much beyond the Golden Week.

Next, let’s take a look at the other games in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu:

  • 04./03. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 13.573 / 3.043.150 (+23%). Nice pre-Golden Week bump;
  • 05./07. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 10.509 / 748.009 (+23%). Sales will top 750 000 units next week, and it will not need the Golden Week for that. The next milestone (800 000 units) should be reached before the end of May;
  • 07./05. [NSW] Yoshi’s Crafted World (Nintendo) – 9.138 / 109.871 (+1%). Sales are flat, but will go back up next week thanks to the Golden Week;
  • 09./11. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 8.456 / 2.269.581 (+23%). Like pretty much all the evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch, it enjoyed a nice pre-Golden Week boost;
  • 10./04. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit (Nintendo) – 7.467 / 43.175 (-18%). Decent sales so far, ahead of the last two kits. Golden Week should see sales increase, and top 50 000 units.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are slighly up ahead of the Golden Week, with 42 108 units sold (only ~2 000 units more than during the previous week). It’s not clear how strong the impact on sales will be, but it’s probably safe to expect them to land in the 45-60 000 units range. The problem is that there’s no big Golden Week title this year, and it’s only the evergreen titles that will carry sales.

Compared to last year during the same week, the Nintendo Switch is selling more: about +7 000 units Year on Year. Naturally, the gap between 2018 and 2019 sales just keeps increasing, and things should not be any different during the Golden Week. The real test will be the weeks following the Golden Week, which is one of the slowest periods of the year for the Japanese video game market.

The Nintendo Switch has now sold over 1 152 620 units in 2019, and 8 042 166 units since launch. It will outsell the PlayStation 4 during Week 18.

The Nintendo 3DS also got a slight boost in sales, with 4 580 units sold (+ 1 300 units week on week). That’s almost half of what the handheld was selling last year during the same week. The Nintendo 3DS has now sold over 100 000 units in 2019 (261 202 units last year at the end of April), and it’s quite telling it took it 4 full months for it to reach this rather unimpressive milestone.
