[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 15, 2020 (April 06 – April 12) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 15, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

As expected, Animal Crossing: New Horizons dropped from the #1 spot this week due to a non-negligible amount of clouds in the sky. Still, sales remain strong with 292 876 units this week (-31%), despite Nintendo Switch sales collapsing due to massive shortages. The game has been attracting lots of brand new users, but this week’s sales is a good reminder that it’s also appealing to people who already own the console.

Since launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold over 3 324 660 units. The 3.5 million units milestone will be reached as early as next week, even if sales were to keep dropping during Week 16. It may even reach the 4 million units milestone at retail before the end of the month!

Despite the massive drop in sales for the Nintendo Switch, the evergreen titles still enjoyed strong sales: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold nearly the same as during Week 14, sales are slightly down for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (-8%), and sales are slightly up for Ring Fit Adventure (+9%) and Super Mario Party (+5%). Only Pokémon Sword and Shield saw a bigger drop in sales (-18%), but sales remain quite strong.

As for One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, it’s holding surprisingly well with 25 000 units sold during its 3rd week on the market. The Nintendo Switch version is having trouble catching up with the PlayStation 4 version, which is fairly unusual (though the gap between the two versions remain rather limited). The game has now sold nearly 200 000 units since launch.

Nintendo had warned that there would be no new shipments for the Nintendo Switch during Week 15, with the exception of units reserved for pre-orders/lotteries at retailers, and so it’s no wonder that sales quite literally collapsed that week. The console only sold 25 313 units, which is one of the worst weeks in a long while for it. Such massive shortages are not that much of a surprise, even the extremely high sales of the previous weeks.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is the one that was the most affected by the shortages: its sales dropped from 100 084 units to a measly 5 884 units. The OG model held a little bit better (and actually sold more than the Lite model for the first time since shortages started back in February), with 19 429 units sold (vs. 554 556 units the previous week).

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold 54 101 units during the same week last year, when it was not impacted by massive shortages. Of course, the gap between 2020 and 2019 sales is still quite big (about 800 000 units), and it’s highly unlikely 2020 sales will drop below 2019 sales any time soon.

Nintendo have now resumed shipments, and so Nintendo Switch sales should start going back up as early as this week (Week 16). That being said, it’s quite likely that we will have to wait for the Golden Week (late April / early May) to see a noticeable improvement in sales.

Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold 13 263 736 units, with 2 115 441 units for the Lite model, and 11 148 295 units for the OG model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales actually went up, with 1 614 units sold this week (vs. 1 230 units the previous week, and 3 340 units last year during the same week). YTD sales now stand at 18 014 units (vs. 94 228 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and YTD sales stand at 24 514 161 units.
