[Japan] Famitsu sales for May 2024 (Top 5 Software, Publishers, Hardware)

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu, with Hardware and Software sales for May 2024 in Japan (April 29th to May 26th, so 4 weeks in total).

Top 5 Software

With over 115,000 units sold during the first 4 days, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was the best-selling game in May in Japan. It came close to the debut of the original on GameCube at retail (138,000 units sold), though if you count digital sales, this remake definitely outsold it (it was #1 on the Nintendo eShop in May, after all).

There’s another new Nintendo Switch game in the Top 5 Software: Endless Ocean Luminous, which sold over 42,000 units during its first month. Despite the series not getting a new game in about 15 years, as of writing, this game has already managed to outsell its predecessor (Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep on Wii with 43,000 units sold in total).

Publishers

Once again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher with about 467,000 units. The new releases (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Endless Ocean Luminous) contributed about 1/3 of those sales, with the usual evergreen titles making up the rest.

  1. Nintendo: 467,000
  2. Sony Interactive Entertainment: 65,000
  3. Square-Enix: 42,000

Hardware

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales saw another drop in May, which hardly comes as a surprise given May is one of the slowest periods of the year when it comes to consoles (and games) sales. And this year, there was no fancy model like the one released ahead of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom last year to boost sales.

Still, the Nintendo Switch managed to sell over 190,000 units sold, which brings total sales to over 32.95 million units. Seven years and 3 months after launch, the Nintendo Switch has finally outsold the Nintendo DS (about 32.86 million units sold in total across all four models), making it the best-selling game console of all time in Japan… and it’s not even done selling!

  1. Nintendo Switch: 192,824 (April 2024: 250,512)
  2. PlayStation 5: 89,207 (April 2024: 89,992)
