Japan: Famitsu sales for February 2021 (Software, Hardware, Publishers) + Top 35 Software for the Nintendo Switch (4 Years)
Famitsu have shared their monthly report on video game sales in Japan, this time covering February 2021 (to be more precise, the period going from February 1st to February 28th, so 4 weeks in total).
This month, there’s no less than 3 entries in the Top 5 Software, starting with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. It’s off to a great debut with no less than 422 784 units sold at retail alone (more than the other two entries combined), which is a lot more than the original version on Wii U (186 000 units sold during the first 3 weeks). It will have no trouble selling over 1 million units when all is said and done.
The second entry is Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town with 202 396 units sold: the best debut ever for the series. It does have the potential to become the best-selling entry ever, as long as the technical issues at launch don’t have an impact on long-term sales. Finally, Bravely Default II is off to an ok debut with 93 061 units sold at retail alone.
No milestone this month, but both Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! and Ring Fit Adventure will hit one by the end of March (2 million units and 2.5 million units respectively). This is the first time since launch that the latest Momotaro Dentetsu isn’t #1 of sales in the monhtly charts.
Here’s the Top 5 Software for February 2021:
01./00. [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury <ACT> (Nintendo) {2021.02.12} (¥5.980) – 422.784 / NEW

03./01. [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! <TBL> (Konami) {2020.11.19} (¥6.300) – 185.039 / 1.974.795 (-67%)
04./02. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure # <HOB> (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} (¥7.980) – 97.066 / 2.413.077 (-58%)
05./00. [NSW] Bravely Default II <RPG> (Square Enix) {2021.02.26} (¥6.800) – 93.061 / NEW
This month again, the Nintendo Switch took all 5 spots in the Top 5 Software thanks to the strong performance of new releases and of the usual evergreen titles.
NSW – 5
Nintendo was the most successful publisher with 887 000 units sold. Nearly half of those sales come from Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, with the rest coming from the usual evergreen titles. Marvelous and Konami are #2 and and #3 respectively, with pretty all of their sales coming from their games in the Top 5 Software.
Nintendo – 887.000
Marvelous – 232.000
Konami – 201.000
Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales took a nasty dive, with “only” 350 447 units sold (down from 875 389 units in January). The main reason behind that sharp drop is the fact that Famitsu included New Year’s week in the January charts, artifically inflating sales for that month. And overall, February is a much slower month for sales than even January.
Despite that drop, the Nintendo Switch still sold about x1.3 more units than last year during the same month (298 685 units). The lack of severe shortages really helped (though the OG model is getting hard to find in stores), especially as demand remains unusually strong. The gap between 2021 and 2020 sales is nearing 400 000 units, with 1 225 836 units sold so far this year (vs. 864 258 units last year).
LTD sales now stand at 18 566 210 units, with 3 346 656 units for the Lite model, and 15 219 554 units for the OG model. Speaking of the OG model, it hit a milestone this month: 15 million units sold since launch!
As for the Nintendo 3DS, it actually sold more units in February than January with 3 121 units sold (up from 2 838 units in January 2021, and 2 961 units in January 2020). Of course, that increase is anything but noteworthy, as the console has already been discontinued and its fate pretty much set in stone at this point. YTD sales now stand at 5 959 units (vs. 9 418 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 564 946 units.

Also, as a bonus this month, we have the (lifetime) Top 35 Software for the Nintendo Switch since launch, originally featured in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine (and more precisely the special feature celebrating the 4th Anniversary of the console). It shows retail sales during the first 4 years of the platforms.
We can see that the Nintendo Switch already has no less than 14 million-sellers at retail alone, with at least 2 more coming this year (Pokémon Shining Diamond / Brilliant Pearl and Monster Hunter Rise). No doubt there will be quite a lot more in the years to come, including some evergreen titles like Kirby Star Allies that will need a little time to get to 1 million.
The majority of games in the Top 35 are from Nintendo (which really isn’t a surprise), though third-party publishers managed to get quite a few spots for themselves (including two titles that have sold over 1 million units).
