Japan: more data for Week 28, 2016, Yo-kai Watch 3, New 3DS (XL) [Media Create]

Media Create

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 28. During that week, a total of 861 000 units were sold for Software, which is 297.49% of Week 27 sales. It’s the first time in a while that total Software sales topped 800 000 units in Japan.

Naturally, this massive increase in sales is due to the launch of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura, which sold about 632 000 units during the first two days. According to Media Create, the sell-through ratio is 63.07%, which means that not only Yo-kai Watch 3 sold less than its predecessor (including Yo-kai Watch Busters), but the sell-through ratio is also worse.

Here’s some data (courtesy of hiska-kun):

  • Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke (Level 5) {2014.07.10} (¥4.937) – 1.316.707 <92,16%> [1.428.719 units shipped]
  • Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Aka Neko-dan / Shiro Inu-tai (Level 5) {2015.07.11} (¥4.968) – 693.538 <73,60%> [942.307 units shipped]
  • Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (Level 5) {2016.07.16} (¥4.800) – 632.135 <63,07%> [1.002.275 units shipped]

Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura is off to a disappointing start, but sales should remain strong in the upcoming weeks/months. Unfortunately, it’s a bit too early to say how much the game should end up selling when all is said and done.

Hardware-wise, Media Create reports that about 68 000 units were sold this week, which amounts to 95.67% of Week 27 sales. Sales are down for pretty much all platforms (and especially the Wii U, which had the release of the new Splatoon Premium Pack the previous week), with one exception: the New Nintendo 3DS (XL).

Sales for the latest Nintendo 3DS models for Week 28 amount to 136.68% of Week 27 sales. Media Create believes this is due to the new Yo-kai Dream medals, which come with a NFC chip, and are compatible with Yo-kai Watch 3. This seems to have led some players to get a New Nintendo 3DS (XL) to take advantage of that feature.
