Fire Emblem Heroes – Relay Defense: all you need to know

Today, a new type of map for Fire Emblem Heroes went live: Relay Defense. It works almost like Rival Domains, but with one major difference: the goal is to protect your fortress during an 8 turn battle. You send a Brigade of 20 heroes to battle, and every two turns (turns 3, 5, and 7 to be precise), you swap your active group of 5 Heroes (even if they still have full health). You need to make sure all your Heroes are up to the task: no weak link, or you will end up in trouble.

You start by creating a Brigade of 20 Heroes. Like in Rival Domains, you can “hire” Heroes from your Friends (the Hero your friends can get from you is the one located in the first slot of Team 1). Don’t worry if you’re shorthanded: any empty slot will be automatically filled up by with Level 40 reinforcements.

Fire Emblem Heroes Brigades

If you haven’t done so already, you can unlock the Edit Brigades option in the Allies menu by tapping Edit Brigades from within the Rival Domains or Grand Conquests screen. Important note: you can only have one Hero with Sing or Dance in the same team, and duplicates are not allowed.

Battles take place on 8×6 maps, with fortresses and camps:

  • Fortress: takes 3 hits to be destroyed. If destroyed, you lose the battle. You can warp to your Fortress you control.
  • Camps: take 2 hits to be destroyed. Once destroyed, you cannot get it back. Heroes can teleport to an allied Camp or any adjacent space, which is why you need to defend them at all costs: you don’t want the enemy to be able to use your captured Camp(s) to reach your Fortress faster!

Both Fortresses and Camps act like defensive terrain, and units get 10HP back at the beginning of each turn when they’re in one.

The battle ends at the end of the 8 turns, or as soon as your Fortress is destroyed. The target score is calculated based on the number of enemies you defeated, and the number of allies still alive. You also get bonus points for successfully defending your Fortress or Camp (if they take any damage, you will get less points).

Relay Defense have 8 different levels, and you need to clear each one in order to reach the next one.

Some final notes:

  • you can complete a Relay Defense map up until 2 days after its end using Bookmark data. If you don’t clear it before then, you will not get any reward;
  • the location where Heroes appear during battle may change depending on enemy positions, and whether camps are destroyed or not;*
  • you cannot earn Hero Merit on those maps.

As usual, keep an eye on the Events and Content Updates and Characters pages to keep up to date with all that’s happening in Fire Emblem Heroes!
