[E3 2016] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Additional details

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the WildOnce Day 1 of E3 2016 came to a close, Nintendo sent a press release to give additional details about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Most of them were already seen in the various Nintendo Treehouse Live presentations.

First, we have the Shrine of Trials. As mentioned yesterday, there’s more than 100 of them in the world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and they feature various challenges (which can be solved in various ways). If you overcome the challenge and solve the puzzles inside, you will receive a Spirit Orb from the monks who designed the shrines.

In those very shrines, you can find Runes: special items that grant you special powers/abilities. Here’s some examples:

  • Magnesis Rune: allows you to lift and toss metal objects
  • Remote Bomb: there’s two types of bombs. There’s spherical bombs (which can roll), and cubical ones (which stay in place)
  • Stasis: briefly stops moving objects
  • Cryonis Rune: allows you to freeze water and create ice pillars

As for weapons, you must either find them yourself, or steal them from enemies. But you need to be careful: they can break once you’ve used them a certain amount of time. The battle system features offensive and defensive maneuvers, which allow you to temporarily slow time.

Another major change compared to almost all previous The Legend of Zelda games: you cannot find hearts or rupees by cutting grass. Instead, you have to forage for food: mushrooms, wild animals, etc. You can cook in order to make delicious dishes, with certain recipes granting you temporary boosts (extra hearts, extra stamina, resistance to cold, etc.). Of course, you can eat raw ingredients if you want, but it will not be as effective as cooking.

Finally, about Wolf Link: you can only summon him once per day, so you really need to make sure you do so at the right time!
