Detention (2D atmospheric horror side-scroller) rated for Switch in Taiwan

With Halloween fast approaching, what about a nice horror indie game… announcements leak on Taiwanese rating boards? Pretty recently, Detention (a Taiwanese 2D atmospheric horror side-scroller) was rated for the Nintendo Switch. As of writing, the developers (Red Candle Games) are yet to make an announcement, but an official rating is generally a pretty good sign a game is coming to a given console.

Never heard of Detention before? Here’s what the story is all about:

Greenwood high school, located in a remote mountainous area, two students found themselves trapped and vulnerable. The place they once knew has changed in unsettling ways, haunted by evil creatures. To escape, they must explore the mysterious campus filled with ominous objects and puzzles. How will they survive in this ever threatening environment? Could they return to safety in one piece?

Detention offers a unique setting: a fictitious world in the 1960s Taiwan, when it was under martial law.  It’s described as a story-driven atmospheric horror game, that incorporates East Asian elements that are not frequently used in games. The game draws on local Taiwanese cultural references, but also Taoism, Buddhism, and Chinese mythology, to tell a “unique and terrifying story”. Certainly sounds promising!

Detention is a “2D atmospheric horror side-scroller”, with classic point and click exploration. Your goal in this game is to explore a high school… which wouldn’t be much of a problem if said high school wasn’t encroached in evil! Exploration certainly becomes a much more risky endeavour when horrible monsters are roaming around.

While exploring the high school, you will find various items and objects to interact with. And by progressing through the game, you will come across and unveil more and more mysteries, until finally, you finally discover the dark past of that cursed school…

Here’s the main features of the game:

  • 2D atmospheric horror with spine-chilling atmosphere.
  • Immersive gameplay and puzzle solving experience
  • Unique Taiwanese/Eastern cultural references.
  • Original sound tracks, fusing Electronic, Lo-Fi, and Rock with traditional Asian instruments.
  • Unique and appealing graphics.
