Nintendo Switch (South Korea)

Daewon (one of the South Korean distributors for Nintendo consoles and games) have shared some sales data for the Nintendo Switch in South Korea. The console is enjoying explosive growth in the country, with 90 964 units sold during Q2 2020 (+106.4% compared to last year during the same period). Games sales nearly tripled, with 325 545 units sold (+189.7% Year on Year)

That growth is attritubted to two main factors: the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the Covid-19 pandemic. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is so popular that when TMON (a major e-commerce operator) held a promotional event in May, selling only 10 units of a bundle with the console and the game, they received no less than 562 088 phone calls… in one hour!

During the the first half of the year, the Nintendo Switch sold 173 812 units (+61.5% Year on Year), and games sold 613 135 units (+107.7% Year on Year). Since launch, sales stand at 596 682 units for the console, and 1 769 937 units for games.

An important thing to take into account is that Daewon is but one of the distributors in South Korea. Nintendo Korea themselves supply some stores, such as large discount stores. Therefore, the numbers above do not paint the full picture; the Nintendo Switch and its games have sold more than what Daewon reported (though the exact numbers for either remain a mystery).
