Nintendo 3DS: notice about errors impacting the YouTube app

If you want to watch some videos on YouTube on your Nintendo 3DS, there’s two ways to do so:

  • download the YouTube app from the Nintendo eShop
  • use the web browser (only on New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL)

Bad news for users on a Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL or Nintendo 2DS: it’s currently impossible to watch videos using the YouTube app. Indeed, if you try to do so, you will get an error message instead of the video.

In a notice posted on the official website (in Japan), Nintendo mentions they have received many reports from users about those errors, which confirms it’s a widespread issue. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t say what the problem comes from, which isn’t surprising: the app is developed and published by Google, and there’s not much they can do.

Nintendo ask users to try again later, and wait until the issue is fixed. Naturally, if you’re on a New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL, you can always watch some videos on YouTube via the web browser in the mean time.

Given how frequently the YouTube services are updated, generally without any prior notice, it’s not surprising that the Nintendo 3DS app would break (ensuring compatibility of the services with it most definitely isn’t at the top of Google’s list of priorities!)…
