Square-Enix’s Matsuda (President) on Nintendo Switch support (more games + ports), worldwide releases

Today, in an interview with Nikkei, Yosuke Matsuda (President) shared some interesting details about Square-Enix’s strategy, including the Nintendo Switch. He explains that having more platforms is a pretty good thing for content creators, and as such, he really wants the console to be successful. It’s for this very reason that he wants more games to be developed for that platform, and existing ones to be ported if feasible.

It’s true that Square-Enix has already announced/released quite a few games for the Nintendo Switch:

  • I am Setsuna
  • Minna de WaiWai! Spelunker
  • Seiken Densetsu Collection
  • Dragon Quest X
  • Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete
  • Project Octopath Traveler

This is a pretty neat line-up for just the first year (granted, Project Octopath Traveler may not launch before March 2018, as we know very little about it), and shows the publisher is serious about its support for the Nintendo Switch (at least for now).

Later in the interview, Yosuke Matsuda notes that 2017 has the following: the Nintendo Switch, Project Scorpio (Xbox), Windows 10’s game mode, and gGoogle’s Tango (mobile AR platform). In an absolutely shocking statement, he reveals that right now, the company is focusing more on the Nintendo Switch.

He also mentions worldwide releases, and how important they have become. According to him, it’s the reason Final Fantasy XV has already shipped over 6 million units worldwide. Does that mean we can expect one for Project Octopath Traveler? Unfortunately, it’s unlikely the game is significant enough for Square-Enix to warrant one…
