Media Create sales for Week 51, 2015 (Dec. 14 – 20) [Top 50]

Quite a few games came out during Week 51 in Japan, but none of them come close to Monster Strike‘s sales. This Nintendo 3DS game sold 437 903 units during the first four days: according to Famitsu, that’s around 40-60% of all units sent to retailers at launch.

Earlier this week, mixi announced that total shipments (including some Asian countries, and Nintendo eShop sales) topped 1 million units during the first two days. It’s now pretty clear the company simply chose to ship enough copies to last until early January, which may be a tad risky if sales are not strong enough during the holidays. However, it’s pretty clear many Japanese kids will find a copy of Monster Strike waiting for them in a few hours!

Monster Strike didn’t sell as well as Puzzle & Dragons Z in 2013 (which sold over 500 000 units during launch week), but its performance at launch is still pretty good. It will be interesting to compare their sales trajectories within the next couple of weeks, and see if Monster Strike manages to reach 1.5 million units sold like Puzzle & Dragons Z. One thing’s for sure: sales should remain strong until (at least) early next year.

Unfortunately, none of the other releases this week were for Nintendo consoles. That being said, Software sales on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS were so strong this week, it doesn’t really make any difference. Let’s start with Monster Hunter X, which is still enjoying some monstruous sales: over 188 225 copies were sold (-2% compared to Week 50) during its 3rd week on the market. It looks like Capcom is finally able to meet demand, and shortages should now be a thing of the past.

The stars of the holiday period are definitely Splatoon, Super Mario Maker and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, which all enjoyed really strong sales this week. With 86 332 units sold (+69%), Splatoon is about to reach the 1 million units threshold at retail alone, and might very well sell over 100 000 units next week (Christmas week, one of the strongest of the year).

Super Mario Maker is just behind Splatoon, with 84 789 units sold (+74%), and is proving to be a pretty popular present for Christmas. It’s now sold over 500 000 units at retail alone (575 977 units to be more precise), which is a pretty good result. It will be interesting to see if it will manage to sell 1 million units when all is said and done, but if it does, it will not be before a long while.

Unsurprisingly, the chart is filled with family-friendly games on Nintendo 3DS, such as Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (49 309 units sold, +78%), Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 2 (39 397 units sold, +83%), or Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (33 661 units, +137%!). Yo-kai Watch Busters even managed to sell over 100 000 units this week, thanks to both the holiday and the latest movie.

As for Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros., it had a pretty disappointing debut earlier this month, but since then, its sales have been surprisingly steady. Unfortunately, it will most likely not be enough for retailers to go through all the units sent for launch without them having to discount it…

Finally, we have several games making a comeback this week, thanks to the holiday boost:

• #18 – Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon (11.656 units sold, +63%)
• #19 – Animal Crossing: New Leaf (10.898 units sold)
• #20 – The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes (10.500 units sold, +54%)

Hardware-wise, everything is going pretty well for Nintendo, which sold 144 115 units of its Nintendo 3DS during Week 51 in Japan. As expected, the increase is quite noticeable compared to Week 50, but not nearly enough to compensate the drop from 2014. This is nothing surprising or unexpected, and in fact, it’s better that you’d expect for a console that might very well get a successor next year.

Next week, the Nintendo 3DS will have sold over 20 million units in Japan: a notable achievement in the current market, largely dominated by mobile platforms. 2016 will be a pretty interesting year for the 3DS, as Nintendo is bound to reveal its mysterious “NX” platform. If you take that into account, plus the fact the 3DS will celebrate its 5th anniversar in February, you’d naturally expect sales to drop sharply next year.

However, the line-up for 2016 is looking pretty good so far for the Nintendo 3DS, with some really strong games lined-up: Dragon Quest XI, Yo-kai Watch 3, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, Puzzle & Dragons X, and most likely a new Pokémon game… not that many consoles get so many high profiles games during their 6th year on the market!

As for the Wii U, it’s selling pretty well… almost too well, in fact! The Splatoon bundle has proven to be so popular that it’s now sold out in several places (which means it’s now gone forever, as it was a limited edition). Of course, the Super Mario Maker bundle is still available, along with the regular Premium Pack, but it will be interesting to see if the lack of Splatoon bundle will have any noticeable impact on sales.

This week, the Wii U sold 79 266 units in Japan, which is by far one of its best week in quite a while. Will it manage to sell over 100 000 units during Christmas week? It’s definitely possible, though the lack of Splatoon bundles may be a problem. After all, it’s mainly thanks to that game (but also Super Mario Maker) that the Wii U has been selling so well since June. This holiday period has been significantly better than last year (which was rather disappointing), as sales have basically doubled compared to their 2014 levels.
